let'send e-mails to washington, telling them that there are 15,000 hungry fans waiting here for them ;D While you're at it, why not write to the Washington Redskins, saying that a new 40,000 seat stadium is being built in Winnipeg. It should convince the Skins' to pack up and move to Winnipeg for 2006!

DC's support of the Nationals will die in a year or two just like the last 2 attempts at MLB there and the Caps are looking dead in the water more and more with each near empty house. (That Lightning game was simply a disgrace as the place looked completely deserted.)
This situation could beat out Carolina and Nashville for "first team to go" status the way it's going.

And I suppose the Nationals are making plans for a move to Winnipeg as we speak. Yeah exactly.. still I don't know where you're getting facts from. This year attendance is low. In the past we've had higher rates than both Boston and Calgary. The only reason attendance is so low is because Washington chokes it up whenever they make the playoffs. Fans get tired of seeing choke artists year after year. However there are teams with much bigger problems than Washington so lay off.

The Caps were doing fine as an orginization for 25 years before Leonsis purchased the team. Sure they struggled for the first few years but what expansion team doesnt? Washington made some great draft picks along with a few solid trades here and there and eventually became a playoff team. During the 90's they were alway's a legit contender for the Eastern Conference title and never had a problem attracting fans to the Capital Center.
It's not hard to see the Capitals have some work to do in order to get the fans back. Two horrible seasons and a year long NHL lockout will do that to a city. Add on the fact that the Washington will probably finish in the lower half of the standings this year. But make no mistake, the fans are here, they just need to get over the fact that Dale Hunter, Peter Bondra, Calle Johansson, Mark Tinordi, Joe Juneau, Craig Berube, Adam Oates and others are not coming back. It may take a season or two but the fans will come back.

Never mind that but Adam Oates is 13th in all time NHL scoring! How can you say he's not a superstar? he even has more points than our own Dale Hawerchuk....

We haven't seen it for two days here now, just looking out my window now, it's a grey day In fairness thought, the weather has been unbelievable for the past week or so, sunny and warm except for yesterday and today

i never really considered oates a superstar either.
compared to the other centers of his generation, he was very good, but i find it hard to class him as a superstar compared to guys like gretzky, lemieux, messier, yzerman, hawerchuk, stastny, lafontaine, francis, and younger centers like sakic, forsberg, roenick, sundin, and modano.
oates was a great playmaker, but i'd take any of the above players in their prime over him. my standards for the "superstar" label are probably too high, though.

I thought Vegas was the fastest growing area in the US right now. And no NHL team, hope Bettman doesn't find out!! That is correct. Las Vegas is the fastest growing US city. However, they should never get a NHL hockey team as nobody would support it. Just look at the Canes'. Raleigh-Durham is one of the fastest growing areas in the US, but that didn't translate into a fast-growing fanbase, as Karmanos imagined it would...

You know, even Scott Taylor predicted on Headline Sports at the time, that Carolina would be the next boom franchise in the NHL the way San Jose was 5 years before. It didn`t quite happen did it?

(Who wasted 5 years of first rounders which was compensation for Stevens when he went to the Blues.) I just don`t see the fans coming back this time around. If they were still in Maryland, yes but not in DC and with the Skins off to a decent start no less.

It's not just the Caps. The new Washington Nationals MLB franchise didn't exactly set attendance records since moving from Montreal. I guess DC isn't much of a sports city.

If you guys were gonna make a list it would probably go something like this:
1- Carolina Hurricanes 2- Pittsburgh Penguins 3- Atlanta Thrashers 4- Nashville Predators 5- Washington Capitals
There are atleast 4 teams ahead of Washington when it comes to extinction. I however hardly believe that Atlanta, Nashville or Washington will relocate. If anyone it will be Carolina. But Bettman isn't gonna let all these teams fall by the wayside especially seeing as most of them are 98 or newer. Washington has a great storied reputation and I really can't see them moving anywhere ever. Bettman is pretty hardcore on wanting to keep everything where it is atm.
Also, to the guy who said Adam Oates isn't a superstar.. put down the crack for a second. Granted he always did things the quiet and less conventional way he is still fitting of the title "Superstar". Simple math suggests Oates > Iginla+Lecavalier+Nash 7 days a week.

The Nationals had some of the best attendance in MLB this year, and that was at the old RFK stadium. Usually new MLB teams have brand new state of the art stadiums but not in Washington. D.C. fans came out in droves (I was one of them) to one of the most outdated stadiums in North America to watch the Nats play. Can you imagine what it will be like when the new stadium is completed? The Washington Redskins draw 80,000+ to Fed Ex Field every Sunday. Not only are the Redskins the most profitable franchise in the NFL but they rank number 1 against every sport. Thats right friends, higher than the N.Y. Yankees, Boston Redsox, L.A. Lakers, Dallas Cowgirls, N.Y. Giants...Washington tops them all. Like I've stated a hundred times before in this same thread, Washington had a long history of supporting the Capitals up untill Leonsis showed up and killed the team. Chicago, Buffalo ring a bell? There are a few non sunbealt teams in the league that alienated there fans for a few years and have some work to do in order to get them back. Factor in a year long lockout and yeah, your going to have poor attendance your first year. But to say Washington D.C. isnt a sports town....lol. Some of you guys are off your rocker.
