I've kept my mouth shut long enough....finally....once and for all.........who gives a crap about the jets in the WHA!!!.....it was a lower caliber league that used old age ex NHLers to gain attention....
I think it's really pathetic that when jets fans resort to talking about the "dynasty" the jets had in the WHA....guess what people...nobody cares....it's barely even mentioned in the hockey hall of fame if at all.....cause i don't remember seeing anything about it there.....
Since I've moved to Edmonton i haven't heard one person mention anything about the WHA....or when the jets are brought up...people saying how great they were in the WHA with Bobby Hull and the other Swedish meatballs he played with.......nothing about it....only about the NHL...
The jets i know and love are from the NHL years when they competed at the top level...so people...stop scratching at the bottom of the barrel for some kind of "glory years" when we have enough "glory moments" in the NHL to remember....

I suppose that's why the WHA won most of the head to head games against NHL teams before the two leagues merged.... The NHL would rather not talk about those years, since it bled some teams in red ink at the time. Well, the Oilers sucked in the WHA. Their glory years were in the 80's in the NHL. It was hard for the Jets to put on a competetive team in the NHL. They were stripped of all their star players upon entry to the NHL. And when the Jets finally managed to draft a number of future superstars, it was the early 90's when the Jets could not afford to keep them..

If it wasn't for having that WHA team you probably wouldn't have had an NHL team to enjoy.

I think Gretzky said it best about the WHA... they could match the NHL on top-end talent, but didn't have the depth on the 2nd/3rd lines.
FWIW, I agree with you that Winnipeggers give the WHA much more esteem than anywhere else. And I don't think the league as a whole was as good as the NHL - Anders Hedberg never scored anywhere near his WHA pace in the NHL, for example. But if you could have moved the Jets teams of the late 70s into the NHL, they would have been a very good team.
The NHL at the time didn't have the parity we see today: you basically had 3-4 excellent teams (Boston, Montreal, Islanders and Philly) and the rest sucked. I think the Jets would have fit in at the top of the sucky NHL teams, so to speak.
The Jets were different than Edmonton and other WHA teams in that they filled out the roster with a lot of talented Europeans (which were non-existent in the NHL at the time) as opposed to buying one or two stars and filling out the line-up with minor-leaguers who couldn't otherwise make the NHL.
And as far as Edmonton goes, if Winnipeg won 5 Stanley Cups, no one would mention the Avco Cups in Winnipeg either.

Well now...this thread still has some interest....ok than.... It was hard for the Jets to put on a competitive team in the NHL. They were stripped of all their star players upon entry to the NHL. And when the Jets finally managed to draft a number of future superstars, it was the early 90's when the Jets could not afford to keep them.. Stripped of talent?...who stripped us?.....or is it because Hull was to old 10 years before that.........or was it because hey...the meatballs were pretty much useless in the north American style TOUGH NHL?.... it's funny you say "finally we managed to draft a number of future superstars".........cause those drafts came when Mike Smith was GM....and i haven't heard of any good things being said about him from anybody on this forum......... If you guys are so pissed off about me crapping on the WHA jets......than why are you on this forum trying to bring back the Jets to the NHL?.....how about you guys go start a WHA forum and hope Winnipeg brings back the WHA....I'm here hoping Winnipeg brings a team back into the NHL...

Ummm, maybe it's because the WHA was NHL-calibre, and revolutionized the North American game, during it's brief existance. As much as the NHL would like to forget about the WHA, it will always be regarded as the league who changed the NHL...for the better. PS...A 'WHA forum' already exists, but has no credibility, as the 'new' WHA is a complete joke...

Read John Ferguson's book Thunder & Lightning and you will get a good idea of just how badly the Jets got jobbed. Bill Wirtz put a moratorium on trades with the Jets and Fergie was only able to make deals with friends of his in the league. (The exact same thing happened to Hartford.) So combine the lack of trade options, the total rape after the WHA/NHL merger, Larry Gordon, then of the Oilers throwing everyone but Edmonton under a bus and free agency not being reality yet and you see why it was very tough for the Jets, Nordiques and Whalers to be competitive.

Check out the book, it is scary how hard the NHL board of governors burned us throughout our time in the league.

It's amazing how the old boys network in the NHL used to work. Wirtz, Sinden their teams have been the shits for years.

That Jets team mopped the floor with the Soviet National Team, possibly the greatest team ever assembled anywhere in hockey history. Name one NHL team that did that.
Nuff said.
