I know everyone wants Brad Richards, but I'd look at Mike Richards instead. Heart and soul guy, team captain, a battler for the puck and his teammates; isn't getting along with both the Flyers head coach & the Philly local press at present. Trade Bogo + for Mike Richards please. Richards grew up in Kenora and played AAA hockey in Winnipeg. Mike Richards all the way!!!!

Well Selanne would be a treat, but realistically,in terms of reasonably priced free agents that could potentially fill some of the team's holes over the long term, Ryder, Laich, Fleishmann, and Vrbata would all be good fits. On the defensive side, the addition of Bieksa, who loves Winnipeg, would be a dream. Their blue line scoring would be the best in the league. Also Ehrhoff would work great with Enstrom and Buff, would be a great fit.

NEVER EVER TRADE AWAY FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS! Unless you have a legitimate shot at a cup run.
I hope they stick to building with youth.

Brad Richards - would be nice, but the fact that the Stars held on to him at the deadline may mean he re-signs in Dallas. Simon Gagne - yes please. Tim Connolly, Brooks Laich or James Wiesniewski would be great. We may have an in with Kevin Bieska for obvious reasons. Tomas Fleischmann wouldn't be so bad either. Eric Brewer could be good to get experience wise.
Lots of great players up for grabs out there this year!

Bieksa is a plus 32,tied for second best in the league. He'd bring you both. Dan Girardi would also fill a shutdown role well.

Somewhere today I read about the Thrashers trading Tkachuck for draft picks, the year they made the playoffs. And also that there was a lack of an overall strategy for the Thrashers. My feeling is that if the team is a young team with good future potential, we should keep building on that theme. For that reason, i am against giving up draft picks - IMO. I would love to see a new Hawerchuk (or Toews) rolling into Winnipeg over the next 4-5 years! I thought you didn't have to give up draft picks to sign a UFA? If you can just sign a UFA without giving up compensation, then there's no reason why we wouldn't - as long as we make the best choices we can. If we are going to sign a UFA, I would like to either get someone who is still relatively young - with some future upside still - or else go for an experienced player who would be a good mentor - like when the jets acquired Carlyle, or Savard. Great idea for a thread! You are correct... offer sheets / draft picks / etc come in to play only if you are trying to sign an RFA away from another team. UFAs are still open season.

Zach Parise is a RFA... might it be worth trading away our first rounder for his rights. I think this is a pipe dream, to be quite honest. NJ will probably take him to arbitration before anyone can tender him an offer sheet.

I dont think so,Tim is American, and Mike is Pat Stapletons son who are both Canadian. Not like that means anything, cause NHL kids can be born wherever.

build for the future and give the good guys on the Manitoba team a chance to gel and get comfortable, no rush to win.
winning comes with comfort and stability
don't sign over priced free agents that never deliver, plus they take away from the players that are already here
etc etc

Teemu Selanne, this would be huge, and i really hope once the deal is official hustler & lawless try and get Selanne on the radio for an interview, come on 1290 try and book the finish flash for his thoughts on at least the NHL's return to Winnipeg.

NEVER EVER TRADE AWAY FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS! Unless you have a legitimate shot at a cup run. I hope they stick to building with youth. Totally agree. Look at the Calgary Flames who have a habit of trading second round picks and are an old team with very few skilled players. This season Chipman needs to take stalk of what he has aquired from president to gm to scouts and build from there. Bring in people who have built winners. Stick with youth and draft players with skill.

The cap should be arund 63 million next year, and we only have 37 million on the books. That should give us enough space to resign our pending UFA's and RFA's, and add one or too solid UFA's. It really depends on what True North wants to cover for players - will we be a close to the cap team like Calgary?
