I was at the Braves - Phillies game last night (donning my authenitc Derek Jeter jersey ) and saw one older gentleman wearing a Thrashers jersey. I struck up a conversation with him. I basically asked why he was wearing a hockey jersey at a Braves game and he said that he wanted to show support for the Thrashers because the rumors are starting to get around that this could be the last year in Atlanta. I told him that I hadn't heard anything as of late other than the team was up for sale not like the Phoenix situation. Apparently his wife's brother (or something like that) works for Phillips Arena and he said that there have been conversations as of late with a possible buyer in Canada. Now I asked what city and he didn't know but was hearing Winnipeg and Quebec City. Of course the conversation moved into the Phoenix thing and I told him that I was pretty sure that TNSE was going to purchase the Yotes while an arena is likely to be built in Quebec City. He wasn't as up to speed on all of this as I was (being on these boards every day). We talked about the lack of support here and that this is just not a hockey city. He, of course, disagreed and felt that the team would do well if they put a competitive franchise on the ice. He is right to a certain extent but let's face it. This team's seasons are numbered. Now, I know this is just some guy and I was probably hearing this 17th hand but it was interesting. The current ownership is trying to sell the Hawks/Thrashers/Phillips Arena as a whole however they are not generating much interest and my guess would be because of the Thrashers. I think they'll be in Quebec City soon. personally, this could be proof that we are geting a team in 2011 no matter what happens with phoenix

Nonsunbelt: Nice post, as it's always interesting to hear people from all over give their opinions. The problem is, in a lot of these markets like Atlanta, Phoenix, Nashville, Miami, Raleigh etc. There aren't a lot of hockey fans...but there are many sports fans, which in my opinion, is a huge difference. Everyone loves to cheer a winner...no matter what sport it is. However, with hockey in these places, if the team is losing, there just isn't enough die-hard hockey fans to keep it going. I think everyone knows/agrees with that.

Just a conversation. I wouldn't put this into print.

I think everyone knows/agrees with that. I feel like a broken record when it comes to southern teams but truth doesn't change when it comes to this. Are there many northern transplants in Fla/Atl/Phx? Absolutely! But they support their own teams. I'm proof of this. It's still Yankees, Giants and Rangers for me. Can the Thrashers sell out? Absolutely! If they have a legit championship contender. But hockey is just a temporary commodity in this region. Not a lifestyle. In Canada, Minnesota, etc. Kids grow up with hockey as part of their lives. They learn to skate before they learn to walk. That says something. It says that professional hockey will always flourish up there because it is the national sport and simply part of being Canadian or a northerner. Even the American NHL players are all from the north. It's time for the NHL to reevaluate the future of their markets.

I see the Braves made the playoffs. Hey, nosunbelt, are you going to the Thrashers' home opener? If so, can you report back to us on the attendance? The Braves will be on TV that night, so if you'd rather watch that, I understand. Thanks for considering it.

I have a softball game on Friday (it's our playoffs too:) ) so I won't be there ... not that I was planning on going anyway. The only dates I have on my Thrashers calendar is January 22 and February 11 when my RANGERS come into town. I do have Braves playoffs tickets for Sunday though!

I happened to watch the Thrashers/Sabres game tonight from Atlanta. There were MANY empty seats.

Phoenix to Winnipeg Atlanta to Quebec City Nashville to Hamilton Florida to Saskatoon/Regina, Portland, or Milwaukee.
Seattle would be a good idea too but the problem there is that KeyArena is inadequate I believe that's part of the reason why the Sonics (NBA) left. They need a new arena.

Saskatoon and Regina are way too small right now. They won't get a team for at least 100 years allowing for a decent population base to build.

hahaha I have to ask "when was this taken? during the game, at intermission or before the game? I watched some of the game and there were empty seats but when looking at this pic and watching the game last night, something is fishy. Sorry but as we have learned on this site over the years, misleading info nad pics come back to haunt credibility. Bunch of the newbies on this site do not get that yet.

I have to ask "when was this taken? If you scan through the other pictures, it's quite obvious it was taken during game play! There are a total of about 3-5 other pictures from the game and they all look like this. ( Only the center hung is in view ) Depressing...almost have to ask yourself "WHY do we want to join the NHL when they can let stupidity like this continue" crowdreel.com/post/8ea0q#crowdreel.com/post/8e6bQ#crowdreel.com/post/8dZap#

With another small crowd in Atlanta last night (Oct 22nd - 9,100), does anyone think the NHL has told the Thrashers' owners to stop inflating attendance figures? I think that's a possibility. After all, if this team is on the verge of relocation, it would be harder to justify such a move if they're still reporting attendance figures like 13,000 or 14,000.

Interesting thought, or maybe the owners are doing that on their own because they still have business interests there. They likely wouldn't want to look like they greedy and without Civic Pride.
