The city and asper talked about the new stadium the past 2 months, and now apparently it's going to go to the councillers. This is a huge step, and now Katz, Baur, and Asper are going to be putting a plan for the initialization of land permit.
This is good news, because no land is currently ownerd by either party that a stadium could be built, and ALL city zone laws would permit the land has to fall to city zone laws and pass all hearings. This could take 2 years.
This means 2 things. The stadium will be built on new property that is not in any area that is curretly developed.
This could take 1 year to pass, and the next available hearing to pass, and by that time, the team and city could reveal plans, and annouce construction date.
With all this, I would suggest the stadium construction would start late summer 2008. With land law construction early 2008. And ready for the start of the 2011 season.
The only areas possible would be the following-
-Headingley(near the movie drive in) -Headingley(near the canadian aviation site) -Winnipeg downtown(connected to Higgins avs to Mcphillips street next to the railroads) -Wilkes Ave(near the Golf Dome and RT Seed Plant and Brewery.

If the city is involved then there is no way it will be in Headingly (personally I think that is the worst spot for it)
I still like that spot behind Coyotes on Bishop Grandin, huge amount of land, easy access, only drawback is it's a bit of a longer drive for North end and Transcona residents

Thats what I think as well, unless jetsengine can provide a link. I'm not going to get excited until I see a link or hear of this in the news.

I thought they opted to renovate the stadium instead of building a new one.

They haven't decided to do anything. They are deciding in typical Winnipeg fashion; 1) conduct a study, don't reveal the findings 2) have a second and third study, don't reveal the findings from those studies either 3) conduct another series of studies (this after 3 years of studies), reveal the studies, that it's not feasible, but would have been feasible if built 3 years ago. 4) nothing is done, and we wait. That is the Winnipeg Way!

I'm leaning more and more to giving Asper the team outright if he builds the Stadium just to get a freakin' Stadium built!

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers days as a community owned team could be coming to an end.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press, David Asper, the executive vice-president of CanWest Global Communications is close to making an offer to invest in the Bombers as part of a plan that would include the building of a new stadium.
Although Asper would not reveal the details of his bid, sources close to the deal told the Free Press that Asper would assume control of the club and partly fund the construction of a $100-million-plus football stadium and retail complex.
The proposed new stadium would be on the site of the current Canad Inns Stadium.
"I seriously respect the members of the Bomber board who are going to have to consider and make this decision. It's not going to be an easy decision, although I think the proposal has many benefits for the community," Asper told the Free Press.
"It's potentially a 50-year decision and you've got to consider what is in the best interest of the club, the community and the fans very carefully."
The Asper proposal will also include benefits for amateur football, and it would also depend on a substantial commitment from more than one level of government.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are currently owned and run by a non-profit organization managed by a board of directors. After facing bankruptcy in 2000, the team was bailed out by local businesses, the province and city.
Manitoba Premier Gary Doer and Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz declined to comment on the Asper proposal.

Asper contributing his money to an nhl team would be better for the community.

You guys crack me up anytime someone wants to do something in this city you look down on it because they did not suggest bringing an NHL team back to Winnipeg. Asper is a football fan and has wanted the Bombers for some time. If he gets this to go ahead and build a new stadium for the city than that is good for Winnipeg.
Everything that happens in this city does not have to include brining back the Jets. The Bombers and the CFL are very important to Winnipeg and we do need a new stadium so it is a win win situation.
A new Stadium is going to have to be built sometime in the future but most of you guys could care less and probably want the Bombers out of Winnipeg cause you think it might help bring back the Jets.

You're a complete idiot Mojo...everyone's thinkin it, but *I'm* gonna be the one to say it! You are entitled to your opinion but why do the Jets have to be dragged into everything? This is good new for the city that someone wants to buy the Bombers and build a new stadium but on here David Asper is a bad guy cause he is not buying an NHL team. Asper is a business man and he will make a lot of money off the Bombers and a stadium.

If I (or 95% of the sports fans in Winnipeg) were David Asper, they'd use their disposable income on buying an NHL team- not a new stadium for the Bombers.
Hm... let the Bombers continue to play at crappy (but adequate) Canad Inns Stadium with our own NHL team and NHL hockey 45 nights a year at the MTS Centre or a renovated Canad Inns Stadium.. and NO NHL team.
Gee. That's a toughie.

A person is going to buy what they like. Mr. Asper likes CFL football more than hockey or he likes the fact that the players actually earn their money, costs for a CFL team are a lot less than an NHL team.

Good for Asper. If this goes through as planned we'll be watching a more competitive Bomber team in a more comfortable environment in no time.
