i'm on the fence with this. in the 80's before mario arrived in pitts. they couldn't draw flies. they were on the brink then. in the 2000's the same scenario. now the kid gets there and they draw well again. i almost want to call it a fair weather city. i just wish it were a southern team "goin south"lol but i'm sure that's right around the corner.

John Buccigross, former host of ESPN2's NHL2Night, was asked about the Penguins' prospects in this week's column. An interesting remark from Pitt-born Bucci: "Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. and growing. Kansas City is bigger than Pittsburgh and is not losing population. Las Vegas is bigger than KC and Pittsburgh and growing. Winnipeg is much bigger than Pittsburgh, and its population has slowly grown." sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=buccigross_john&id=2302899

1. Pitts is way bigger than Winnipeg
2. What does population of a city have to do with anything?
Chicago has 5 million... New York has 8 million... Anaheim has 2 million...
Thousands of empty seats for Hawk, Islander, and Duck games.
Edmonton is the smallest city.... sellout every game.

Attendance is not the everything....larger cities can make a hell of a lot on TV, advertising, corporate sponsorships, etc...crazy but true...of course, attendance is importnant but as long as it's reasonable it's not the only factor depending on the market

Regarding the earlier comments about Vegas and Portland possibly going after teams, I think they're busy trying to get a relocating MLB team. (The Twins and Marlins will likely relocate in the not-too-distant future)

Regarding the earlier comments about Vegas and Portland possibly going after teams, I think they're busy trying to get a relocating MLB team. (The Twins and Marlins will likely relocate in the not-too-distant future) The Marlins are just using the other towns as leverage. For now. In the case of Portland, Oregon there is a more fundamental element that is missing, and that is an interested owner. Paul Allen was left at the altar twice, first in Pittsburgh and a year later, in Phoenix. Then he lost half his net worth in the dot.com bust, lost the Rose Garden arena to creditors a year ago. The baseball effort has been trying to recruit members of the Schnitzer family, of steel fame, the only major old money family in the Rose City. Nope, no interest; they're arts people.
