Carolina has no long-term future in the NHL.
I know they don't have the best team in the league or any big stars, but I wouldn't mind them relocating to Winnipeg.
I imagine attendance is quite poor even for other teams when the 'Canes come to town. Sure, it may say that building was sold out or close to, but I'm sure you could count many empty seats when the 'Canes are on the road.
I've even heard of NHL players who hate playing there... apparantly there's nothing to do in the city, and the atmosphere for games resembles a library.
Tell the 'Canes they should come here!

The canes have a good mix of talent too, they have some old guys out there just grinding wins out for them like Cole, Brind'Amour, Wesley and their star Jeff O'neill.. not to mention youngster Justin Williams, if the canes want to relocate here, they may want to look for some goaltending because they have 2 mediocre goalies Martin Gerber and Kevin Weekes

It's gonna be Carolina. They have some good solid players Too! Don't forget Vasicek, Vrbata, Kaberle. Plus prospects like Kahnberg, Zigomanis and Brendl. (BTW Cole is still young and Weeks is now with the NYR)

I wish I had a chance to post this sooner, but check out this article... your thoughts? I couldn't post the article author because the message board edits out the persons last name. You'll understand when you access the link. The News & Observer's Hurricanes page (April 10): www.newsobserver.com/sports/hurricanes/story/2299608p-8678659c.html"Triangle warms up to life without hockey" Triangle warms up to life without hockeyBut some reflect on absent last gameIt's April, and the Carolina Hurricanes aren't playing. At least this year, it's not because they missed the playoffs.
Today would have been the Canes' last game of the season, against the Florida Panthers in an afternoon game at the RBC Center.
Maybe a playoff spot would have been on the line. Given that the Hurricanes have made the playoffs only twice in the past five seasons, maybe not.
Undaunted, a group of fans will tailgate outside the arena's east entrance today. Flags flapping in the wind, beers fizzing and burgers sizzling, they will party in moot preparation for a game that will never be played.
"It may include a wake," said Russell Kandel, one of the organizers.
Today's game was wiped out with the rest of the season in February when the NHL and NHL Players' Association could not agree on a new labor contract. Those talks continue at the same stirring pace as a game beset by the hated neutral-zone trap. The two sides met last Monday for only the third time since the season was canceled.
The NHL's Board of Governors will gather April 20 in New York to consider its options, the use of replacement players foremost among them. The league, which is committed to playing this fall, has filed two grievances with the National Labor Relations Board over the NHLPA's stance on members who may cross picket lines and their agents.
Amid this posturing, the NHL has fallen off the Triangle sports radar screen. There are still die-hard fans like those who plan to gather today, but on WRBZ-850, program director Adam Gold said "unprovoked" calls to talk about hockey are rare.
"Out of the blue? Not really," Gold said. "And lately I haven't brought it up much at all. The last time we did, I got two or three calls and an e-mail from somebody who was happy to hear it mentioned again."
On what would have been its last day, the lost season has become the forgotten season.

Paul, I see what you mean about the last name lol.
I can't ever see Karmanos selling the team and I would hate for him to be the owner if the team came here

I think he will hang onto it to spite Mike Ilitch I thought that there was some big rivalry between Ilitch and Karmanos prior to the Federov thing. Didn't Karmanos try to partner with the Wings or something prior to getting Hartford and then Ilitch and him had a falling out.

The difference between the two CEO's, is Ilitch knows how to run a hockey team!

Ahhh..how can we have a discussion about Karmanos and not include talking points from everyones favorite American...
Little known fact- Karmanos tried to convince the league to allow him to move the Hartford Whalers to Detroit. Nice try Pete. It is true that Karmanos and his partners were trying to sell about 20% of the Hurricanes. Worse still, good ol' Pete admitted that had he kept the team in Hartford, playing in the old Hartford Civic Center he would be in the same financial shape he's is in today playing in the "hockey hotbed" of North Carolina inside his brand new arena.

I'm with you Whale, Karmanos is the scum that pro-sports owners would have to bathe in sh*t for a week to smell like.
Awhile ago I posted a link to some guy who stockpiled all of Karmanos' costly mistakes in Carolina. It's in the off-topic forum somewhere I think.

Karmanos is one of the worst owners in all of pro sports. After that Federov episode alot of the teams were pretty miffed at Pete and Candy Canes for offering that outrageous contract. Scotty Bowman suggested someone show them how to run an NHL franchise and a Calgary Flames exec. pointed out that its owners like Karmanos that are killing the league.

Just ask the Detroit Vipers of the IHL. Karmanos is clueless when it comes to hockey. His own hatred of Illitch has blinded him from making logical decisions for his NHL club.

Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken in this information I heard three years ago.
Wasn't it true that Peter Karmanos wanted to relocate the Whalers/Hurricanes to play at the Palace of Auburn Hills as a second Detroit team? Then again, Tampa Bay Lightning owner Bill Davidson (who also owns the Pistons and Shock) that runs that arena, likely wouldn't have approved such a transaction anyway.
I'm glad that didn't work out. It would be very lame to have two Detroit teams. Same for Toronto.
It is a bit different in the Los Angeles market as the Mighty Ducks identify with the suburban "satellite" city of Anaheim. Even more so with the Devils (New Jersey) and Islanders (western Long Island) in the New York City market.

Yes, I agree, I think the guy is an idiot, and Paul I thought it was several years ago that he wanted to move his team there
