Good work Kehler, I couldn't agree more. Let's just hope that we officially hear the new name soon... cuz that means it's official that we have a team soon!

I'll say again, the fact that someone personally may not "care" about throwing away our history for no good reason, I do. Yes, we are all thrilled about the idea of having an NHL team to cheer for once again. That's not the point. The Winnipeg Jets meant a great deal to our city, its citizens, and was very influential in the way the professional game today is played. And I will keep on reminding people of that until the day a new team name is announced. On that note, anyone who suggests the name is insignificant needs to giver their heads a shake. We've got all the pieces in place to get a team, and hopefully we'll have a team for next season. By my estimates, with everything else in place, the next largest priority is the TEAM NAME. Of course I voted for the Winnipeg Jets. To me, there should be no debate or discussion needed. For the last 15 yrs, I've believed the NHL would return, and not having the team named the Jets hadn't even crossed my mind. I'm puzzled that it's not automatic.

The team name debate went to like 31 pages in under 2 weeks before it was shut down... as the hottest topic on this site I think it's safe to say that it does at least matter!
I still haven't heard any particularly good reasons for it not to be named Jets when a team comes back. All I have heard is that TNSE is not planning to name them Jets, and so we should just be happy with that! I don't argue that they are leaning that way, but I doubt it's too late to change their minds, and I don't see whats wrong with trying!
Not that I think its an ego thing with Chipman (I assume they just think its a better business decision, but I can't fathom how that could be), but really, he can put a freakin picture of his face on the jerseys as the teams logo if he wants, just name them Jets!
Here's to hoping...

I'm even more puzzled that so many are so easily able to accept that it may not be. I mean, if I offered to buy someone a car, but insisted upon scratching my name all over it with a key, yes, you would probably be happy to be able to drive the car (even though you are paying for its gas), but I think you would be perfectly entitled to question my motives/reasoning for doing something so unnecessary.

Hard to call it the "Hottest" Topic when there were only about 4 of the same people writing in it.... Haha well, fair enough. It was like that towards the end, which is pretty much when it just became certain people getting angry for no real reason. But it definately garnered a lot of interest from the start. My main point was always that it was okay to at least discuss it. Still don't understand why some people got so mad just because people had the audacity to even discuss what the name should be...

I count about 16 different people on the first page alone of the "franchise like no other" thread that got locked because people on the "other" side couldn't act like civilized people.

They should be called the Jets again.

My intention was to have the poll open for 24 hrs to try to quell some of the team name hysteria that was taking over some of the discussion threads. The majority of the votes were for Jets in this poll. It would be interesting to see the demographic make up of the voters and how they voted (I know...privacy laws prohibit this). I think DKehler's petition is more representative of how people feel about retaining the "Jets" name for our team. MOD please lock this poll/thread so that we can concentrate on the implosion of Glendale and their NHL tenant (for now).

With respect, as it's your thread, why close the only thread now available to discuss this topic? People complain when other topics are hijacked, yet appropriate topics are locked.

Yeah, it did become rather uncivilized for the exact reason you mention. The irony is just mind blowing...On the "Return of the JETS" site, the biggest one on the world wide web no less, any discussion of keeping the name Jets has been banished. Amazing stuff. Oh well, back to the poll...I voted "it doesn't matter" so we can hopefully keep the poll open longer.

If the insiders are correct about a new team name, I sure hope to heck it's because the NHL is calling the shots on it.
Outside of that, I can't figure out how a new name is in any way better than the Winnipeg Jets.

Alright, lets try to start a civilized discussion on this, should an NHL team return to Winnipeg, should it be called the Jets?
Points for and against, without opinion or name calling would be great. Peope can either want them called the Jets or not, that's personal opinion and either one is fine, but lets try looking at some pro's and cons. Anyone want to start?

If it is indeed the coyotes who move to Winnipeg, there should be strong consideration towards naming them the jets for obvious reasons. If it's Atlanta or another franchise then I would be fine with any name they choose.

The way I see it:
Pros: Reconnect with our meaningful history, which means a lot to some (many?) people the name is still recognized around the world
Cons: A chance to start fresh

As far as merchandise sales go, I see it as a tricky question whether it's a pro or con.
Con - Would have to pay for Jets logo rights, but would the value go down if Winnipeg had a non-Jets NHL team? I think so, but how much?
Pro - Chipman wouldn't have to compete in sales of say Moose vs Jets, since all Winnipeg stuff bought would be for his team (the Jets)
As far as what would sell more, I don't think there would be a difference, as people are either going to buy new stuff or their not, and there would be a new logo and colour scheme either way.

I have it on good authority that the name that is being considered is "The Pas Pixies".
