How about the Roughriders?!? You should be banned from posting here. Saska-fans can go to Calgary or Edmonton if they choose... As a Bombers Faithful, I could not sit side-by-side a Riders fan and cheer with them for any sports team... Riders support, not wanted... I'd sooner watch this game we love with Americans than rider fans.

Haha, the joke touched a sensitive point I guess... My apologies . Don't worry, I would one of the first to protest if that was their actual name.

If the Coyotes return to the Peg I vote Jets. If anyother team is relocated here It would be tough to call them the Jets....But then again it would be tough not too... The association of the Coyotes is close....

As far back as the early 1990's there was considerable discussion about changing the name of the team from "Winnipeg" to "Manitoba".
While I do not know what the nickname will end up being (ie: Jets, Moose, Falcons, Ice, etc...etc....) I have always said and have almost no doubt that when the NHL does return the team will be called the "Manitoba ___________".
When you take all emotion out of the thought process....the teams market is not the 700,000 people of Winnipeg....it is the 5-6-7 hour radius around Winnipeg (whether you go West, East, South or North) and drawing/creating fans from every direction will be the focus. The focus will be to come to Manitoba (especially those from South Sask, North Dakota and NE Ontario). Take the emotion out and this is a no-brainer. And that is why it most likely will happen.
I ultimately could care less what the end name of the team is AND I will, without a doubt, state that there might be no more than a mere handful of people that would "boycott" the team if it was not called the "Winnipeg Jets". In the big scheme of things...these people will be nothing more than a raindrop in the ocean (of revenue generators...which is the only thing that matters) and True North knows that.
Go Jets Go...Go Jets Go....can/will easily be replaced by MA-NI-TOBA (clap,clap...clap/clap/clap) MA-NI-TOBA (clap,clap....clap/clap/clap) Do it in your head every once in a while and it may just grow on you!

Except this makes the presumption that people outside of Winnipeg would be unhappy if the team was named "Winnipeg … " It never seemed to matter before. This is a classic case of overthinking things.

ever since jetsowner took shape in 2003 (i think) and I think ever since that other message board was replaced I always voted for the name Jets to keep up with tradition from wha-nhl days. Some People will argue we had crappy teams yes thats true but what team hasn't just look at when boston started out they we were not that great but they still kept the name. It did not help that the Great One Oilers dominated our division and conference and the league. But lets not forget the oilers emulated our WHA Jets of Nillson-Hedberg-Hull style of playing.
I am really favoring change of team colors 'cause there are way too many teams with the same color scheme of blue and red. NYR,CBJ,Habs, the colors got to be blue and gold like the blue bombers it should be our city sports colors. Also the goldeyes have name gold in their name, our jets should be called the Golden Jets in honor of the Golden Jets.
Of course I would happy with any name even the name blizzard, still intrigues me.
(its been a long while since I posted I kinda miss it, I will post here a little more often, latters)

There is no presumption being made at all. In my opinion, you will simply be one of those insignificant "raindrops"....who (I would hazard a guess) will still be purchasing tickets to the "Manitoba ________'s" regardless. In my opinion, the name Winnipeg Jets simply does not matter in the big scheme of things...and I am again going to hazard a guess that I will be correct. Winnipeg Jets...fine with me. Manitoba Jets...fine with me. Manitoba Moose...fine with me. Manitoba Ice...fine with me. etc...etc...etc...I simply want an NHL team back here to watch and cheer for ASAP! I will be buying tickets regardless.

But by that logic, naming the team Manitoba "Jets" would deter people from Sask, Dakotas, West Ont., from coming because they are not "represented"... You don't need the name of the team to be included. You are included when you wear your favorite team's jersey. You are included when you cheer them through their playoff series victory. You are included when you cry in excitement along with all the other fully grown men and women around you as you see them lift the Cup.

And before you say it, obviously, it's not up to me. However, I can will voice my opinion on very strongly until a decision has been made.

^^
Fair enough. Having an opinion on what you would like the name to be is fine too...for everyone!
In the big scheme of things....the simple fact is.....it just does not and will not matter.
I will create another related poll to see if my assumption is correct...and if the results are any less than 19 out of 20...I would be completely shocked.

On a similar note, have a look at this thread asking whether it would be a good idea to change the name of our CFL team to "Manitoba Blue Bombers". www.ourbombers.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=28090A lot of the arguments here are equally valid against renaming any prospective Winnipeg NHL team something other than the "Jets". I maintain that to do so is overthinking things and just because something can be done (because people will still buy tickets) doesn't mean that it should be done.

Bump...
I have no horse in this race, but the name "Winnipeg Jets" has brand identity that the "Manitoba Whatevers" does not.

I'd say that would be a good goal, although I don't know how attainable it is. I guess we will see. One mention in the local paper would probably help a great deal, but that probably will not happen at least until near the end of this year when things come down to the wire (hopefully) in Glendale.

Still waiting to hear one good reason not to name the Jets! Great work Kehler, I can't wait to see the signatures start rolling in.
I think the results of this poll show the general feeling... the vast majority want the name to be Jets, a few people don't much care and overwhelmingly there are very few who would be upset if they were called the Jets... so why not give us what we want!

I'll say again, the fact that someone personally may not "care" about throwing away our history for no good reason, I do. Yes, we are all thrilled about the idea of having an NHL team to cheer for once again. That's not the point.
The Winnipeg Jets meant a great deal to our city, its citizens, and was very influential in the way the professional game today is played. And I will keep on reminding people of that until the day a new team name is announced.
