Brian Kelly, not Mike. Sorry couldnt resist!
South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly will reportedly be named the next head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
According to the South Bend Tribune, Kelly is expected to inform his team of the decision at a banquet on Thursday night.
The 48-year-old Kelly is currently finishing his third season with the Bearcats and has a sterling 34-6 record with the school. He will take over for Charlie Weis, who was let go following a 6-6 season in 2009 and a 35-27 record in five seasons with the Irish.
Kelly has led Cincinnati to back-to-back Big East titles, including a 12-0 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl this season. According to the report, it is currently unclear whether Kelly will coach the team in its bowl game.
The Everett, Massachusetts native brings with him a winning pedigree, having coached with Grand Valley State and Central Michigan prior to his stint with Cincinnati. Kelly has an overall record of 171-57-2 in 20 years of coaching, including back-to-back national championships with the Division II Lakers in 2002 and 2003. He went 19-16 in three years with the Chippewas, including a Mid-American Conference title in 2006.
Notre Dame has been one of the most successful programs in college football history but not recently, having not added to its 11 consensus national titles since 1988. The Irish have posted just two 10-win seasons since Lou Holtz's departure following the 1996 season and have won more than seven games only twice in the last seven years.
Hopes were high for the 2009 season, as the Irish got out to a 6-2 start, but the team dropped its last four games to Navy, Pittsburgh, UConn and Stanford. The string of losses prompted the team to fire Weis and decline a bowl invitation.
Notre Dame, which has an all-time record of 837-291-42 -- a .733 winning percentage -- has struggled to find a successful coach since Holtz left. Bob Davie posted just a 35-25 record in five campaigns, and Tyrone Willingham went 21-15 in three years before Weis replaced him.
The school has also gone without a major bowl win since a Cotton Bowl Classic victory to end the 1993 campaign; since that victory, the Irish are 1-9 in bowl games, with the lone win coming last season in the Hawaii Bowl.
Since Weis was fired, quarterback Jimmy Clausen and wide receiver Golden Tate have announced their intentions of entering the 2010 NFL Draft following excellent junior seasons from both.
