www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=295015PHOENIX -- Looking to fill seats, the beleaguered Phoenix Coyotes are offering free tickets. The NHL team unveiled a promotion Friday that will see it give away tickets if it wins on certain nights. The first such game comes on Oct. 24 against Los Angeles -- one of five this season that includes a Dec. 5 game against Ottawa. The Coyotes have labelled the promotion "join the pack" and hope it strengthens the relationship between the organization and its fans. The bankruptcy proceedings over the summer severely hampered the team's ability to market itself and sell tickets. The Coyotes managed a sellout in their home opener when all tickets were sold for $25 or less. The team's second home game on Thursday night drew an announced crowd of just 6,899. Phoenix has had success on the ice so far this season with a 4-2 record. If that continues, it will be giving away plenty of tickets to future games. "Our 'join the pack' promotion ... serves as a call to action, encouraging people to support the team by purchasing tickets and experiencing Coyotes hockey live," Coyotes president Doug Moss said in a statement.

Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.
Do you think that the tickets they give away will count towards their average attendance in regards to whether or not they qualify for revenue sharing?

If the goal really is to stay in Phoenix then this is a bad decision. This is obvious and has been stated by many people here but even if fans are made by getting them to the game they will be used to free or cheap tickets and will not go once the prices increase. Plus people who used to pay full price will not pay anymore and just wait for these type of deals. You simply cannot devalue your product. If long term success is the goal it would be better to have 4,000 people paying full value then 10,000 paying little or nothing.
Of course, on the other hand if the goal is not long term success in the market and instead is to minimize the losses this year (i.e. sort of admitting that the team will be leaving) then this is a good approach. You already have the money from the people paying full price and getting extra people in the building will result in some additional money in term of booze, food, advertising dollars etc... I think the NHL is just trying to minimize the losses and knows the team will be moving.

Not sure if revenue sharing for the Coyotes will really matter this year as the NHL (i.e. the other 29 teams) are picking up the tab in any event.
But in a normal year, or for other teams that is a good question that I would like to know the answer to.

wouldnt you be pissed if you were a owner of a successful team. always propping 10 teams up. i wonder how gary still has a job. his bullsh#t is probably wearing thin on other owners. unless he has been telling them his plan to move teams back north, kind of what he is saying to the media now.

How did all the owners actually vote against moving this team to Hamilton?!? I cannot wrap my mind around how the owners of the 6 Canadian cities, NY, Boston, Pitts, etc. are all willing to prop up these financial 'blackholes'...

Well, they didn't actually vote against moving the team to Hamilton. They voted unanimously to not accept Balsillie as an owner.

Well, they didn't actually vote against moving the team to Hamilton. They voted unanimously to not accept Balsillie as an owner. because they all knew how sweet the deal will be when Ontario gets an Expansion team. The fan 590 said today the the NHL wants a team in Ontario Quebec and Winnipeg.....in that order.

Where does the ’Peg fit on the list of potential new homes?
“It’s still No. 1,” sports business analyst Howard Bloom (sportsbusinessnews.com) insists. “Because it’s not encumbered by any geographical situations like exist in Hamilton. You don’t have to pay a relocation fee.” None of it matters....they are offering opinions! None of them have sat down and got this information from Betman or the majority of the Govenors.....they are spewing out opinions.
