Now all the people come to watch only because they are winning. Bandwagon jumpers who can easily get tickets to these playoff games on a walkup basis. I agree Carolina does have hockey fans the caniacs, but throw this playoff run out the door and look at their regular season attendance and revenue and hurricane merchandise being sold during the reg season.

Attendance around 17K after 2 years of medium to bad hockey in one of the smallest markets. Ticket giveaways numbers between Montreal and Ottawa. (in other words, some Canadian teams give away more tickets---see G&M report). doubled money coming in on Canes TV deal in 2008. (reported: TBJ in 2007/08) Show me merchandise numbers you mention? Did not see a source. So someone who goes to playoff games who attended 5 games during the season is a bandwagon jumper, Show that source !!! Is it the same for some Canucks fan in round 1 ? Especially during a year where so many people lost their jobs and economical uncertainty. (Geez, I lost over $120K in my 401 alone, not to mention my personal liquid savings) Sounds like a opinion piece from a rookie on this site !!

The attendance is just fine at the RBC Center. It has dropped off a bit since the '06 Cup appearance but this is a time of economic uncertainty, people are rightfully being cautious as to how they spend their available funds. I have season tix for the Canes at the RBC Center now and have attended many games in Winnipeg back in the day. I can guarantee that there were a hell of a lot more give aways in the Peg for a Jets game. The average attendance in Carolina is 16,572 per game - around 250 per game less than Edmonton. Throw that argument out the window.
Granted there are bandwagon jumpers for the playoffs - but who wouldn't want to see the playoffs live. This is a community of neophytes - new the hockey world. Traditions are being developed - it will take time.
I have seen a tremendous increase in my short 8 years in the area. From the early years of buying a nosebleed ticket but sitting at ice level - to today and not being able to get tix because games are being sold out.
Carolina will survive. This is a unique market for a "new" team. Many of the residents of North Carolina are transplants from the northern states and Canada. When a Canadian team plays we Canadians show up in droves to celebrate our heritage. And the American love Canadians. We are their beer drinking, hockey playing cousins from the Great White North.
So bee231 - take off, eh! Your points spiteful and without merit.

Well, I am glad for you that hockey is working out in Carolina. Maybe though, just to be fair, bee231's opinion was partly formed by the fact that it was reported that 2 games in round one of the playoffs in Carolina did not sell out. But again, glad that you are able to enjoy the sport down there.

FYI:
Carolina's average gate income was $700,000/game in 07/08. Translation: their attendance is strong, but tickets are cheap. They rank 21st in the NHL and make half a million less per game than Edmonton, the lowest revenue Canadian team.
Things aren't terrible in Carolina, but I wouldn't say they're completely rosy either. Certainly not even close to the revenue of the Canadian teams.
.........And while they've missed the playoffs the 2 previous seasons, they didn't miss by that much, and were in the playoff picture for the entire year. Oh yeah, and they won a stanley cup a few years ago.

I'd say that Carolina probably has a strong fighting argument as to why their team should stay put... Can't say the same about Phoenix though!

I doubt Carolina is going anywhere so It doesnt really matter. I mean look how long it took the coyotes to finally hit rock bottom and on the way down I believe they made like what 2 playoff appearances I think? Carolina won a cup not long ago and while Malkin spanked them tonight I'm sure this impressive playoff run will help their fanbase.
