FORMER Winnipeg Jet forward Rich Gosselin has been named head coach of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Steinbach Pistons.
"Early in our search for a head coach it became very clear that Richmond was the ideal candidate for this position," said team president Mel Sonnenberg. "He has experiences and connections from all over the hockey world that will be very valuable to our organization."
Gosselin, who grew up St. Malo and now lives in St. Pierre-Jolys, will be the first head coach for the Pistons, who relocated to Steinbach from Beausejour following the 2009/09 campaign. The 53-year-old has coached or played for 25 years in North America, Europe and Asia.
Last year, he guided the St. Malo Warriors to the Central Senior Hockey League title in Manitoba and helped the South East Prairie Thunder AAA senior team reach the Allan Cup national final.
The season before he won a Series A championship as head coach of Cortina in Italy and also won a championship in Japan with the Oji Eagles in 2005. He was also behind the bench for a second division championship in Switzerland.
He led the Eastman Selects to the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League championship in 1998-99 and also has coached in Germany and the Netherlands.
Gosselin scored 273 points in 200 games with the Flin Flon Bombers from 1973-76 and was drafted in the seventh round of the 1976 NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens and won an Avco Cup with the Jets of the now-defunct World Hockey Association in 1978-79.
The Pistons also announced today that Scott Unger, director of business operations for the hockey club, has been appointed director of hockey operations.
