Bettman: Coyotes may get new owner, but team staying put Friday, 03.27.2009 / 12:38 AM / News Canadian PressGLENDALE, Ariz. - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says the financially struggling Phoenix Coyotes are actively seeking investors or possibly new ownership, but reiterated that the team won't be relocated.
"Our goal is to bring in new capital and make this franchise solvent," Bettman said Thursday night while attending the Coyotes game against the Edmonton Oilers. "That's our direction, and at this point moving the franchise elsewhere is not on the table."
The Coyotes have reportedly lost US$200 million since current owner Jerry Moyes brought the team in 2001, and are projected to lose another $30 million this season.
Bettman said the Coyotes are actively engaging with potential investors, whom he would not identify.
The Coyotes will miss the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season and have had only two sellouts in 37 home games.
In a recent survey, Glendale residents rejected the notion of taxpayer money to help provide financial assistance to the team.
"We're looking for an infusion of capital and thinking about nothing else," Bettman said. "We're talking to a number of people, but there's no sense of urgency."

Except for... No sense of urgency? Well if losing $30M a year isn't urgent I don't know what more could be? I guess If wall street collapsed completely... Then it may be urgent i guess?

no matter what bettman says i cant imagine anyone in these highly unstable economic times who would be willing to risk money in a team that has lost 200million and has no real positive outlook. Especially since the tax payers dont want to support them financially. It is only a matter of time....

It's almost a waste of time to even make comments on the things that Bettman says. He'd be the only person that could spin what's transpired in the American financial system during the past year and make it sound like everything is just fine and dandy. Reality is going to hit the NHL hard over the next 2 years whether he wants to admit it or not.

.....My question is what is a new owner going to do different from the previous owner. They already give the tickets away. New owners, new rink, new CBA, = no difference. This team is in a bad hockey market. If Bettman would have done 1/4 for the Jets as he has done for the teams in the southern US this web site wouldn't exist.
