Can anyone refresh me??? Its' not like he scored lots... so it should be easy to recall To quote John Paddock "I'm sure he can play; I'm just not sure if he can play at this level." Then they traded him. He was one of my favourite Jets at the time...I'm not sure what Paddock was seeing.

Stu Barnes was a 4th overall pick in 89 same year as Mats Sundin went 1st overall to QC.
We (The Jets) were terrible that past season and that pick was a silver lining to a lousy 12 months.
If I remember right, they always talked about his poor performance yet media questioned the team about giving the kid more NHL ice time.
Now looking back he should have stayed at junior or AHL level and get a ton of ice time to speed his development.
By rushing him into the NHL, he didn't develop right, lost confidence. And to a kid who has excelled his whole hockey career that first real confidence shaker can be really unnerving.
So they dumped him for a veteran who might help the team out of its funk, Randy Gilhen. The trade was bad right from the start. Giving up your future for a "few years left in the tank" veteran. It is now classic poor trading 101.
So not only was a lousy season had, but within a few years we really had nothing to show for it or to build upon.
That is why once a team returns to Winnipeg "who will be GM?" will be the most important question Chipman's group will face.

You make an excellent arguement... (When we get em back I do agree that getting older players so we have a good start is a bad move... ) But I don't remember much of the past.. I was 12 when they left.. so my memories are limited. Thank you guys for the refresher... that does bring somethings back... Awesome.

Randy Gilhen did make an immediate mpact on the team though. at the time Barnes WAS struggling. both clubs did well with the trade. just look at Randy's performance against Calgary in the playoffs and you see that. Gilhen became a JET in that series.

i remember that stu barnes played at the first jets game i ever went to, and did something awesome like score the winning goal or something. at this game, i somehow acquired a stu barnes hockey card, which turned out to be his pro set rookie card. he was my fav player after that for so long (i was only 9 or 10 years old). i think the card is still buried in the back of my closet somewhere.
