i'm hoping Bettman decides it's time to move on in the next few years...he was brought in to get a CAP, now he's got it, he can go...
i believe Dailey is from Winnipeg originally, but i'm not sure and not sure if he'd be the best for this cause...he could be, but he's been Bettman's right-hand man for a long time...
Ken Dryden is an intresting possibility if he loses the Liberal leadership...i don't agree with his politics but he really understands the sport and it's importance to Canada...
i didn't bother putting Wayne Gretzky's name up there...he was a great hockey player...that doesn't mean he's qualified to be great at everything...i don't think he'd be great for the league or Winnipeg necessarily
Don Cherry? get real...

Ron McLean maybe??? He's not a lawyer or anything like Bettman...but he's an intelligent man who understands hockey.
Maybe Tie Domi can try to convince Belinda to become Commissioner...Jk. I really don't have any good suggestions and i think it is a lot more difficult than just having someone that "understands hockey". It's gotta be someone who is business oriented as well. I'm not a Dryden fan either politically but he might be a good commissioner.

i don't think realistically a media person like Ron McLean would be considered for such position...i'm not sure how he's qualified in terms of the business aspects, leadership qualities, etc...
the two persons i have mentioned, Dryden and Dailey, are both Canadian lawyers...i'm not sure Dryden ever seriously practice law, but i think his combination of being a GM, trained lawyer, hockey player and politician, would make him a candidate in the future if he's available...
Bettman and Goodenow, two American lawyers, almost destroyed the NHL...no, it wasn't all their fault by any means; however, the NHL changed for the worse (for the average fan) on their guards with their focus almost exclusively on chasing the $$...Saskin, a Toronto lawyer, is now running the NHLPA...if we could remove Bettman and replace him with a Canadian, I think Winnipeg's chances would improve..jmho

True, I do believe someone like McLean would need some business training but it's not completely out of the question...I mean, the guy negotiated himself into a 1/2 million dollar yearly salary...that's more than lots of the players.
On a separate note...other suggestions could be intelligent Canadian guys like Kevin Lowe, Ken King, or Richard Peddie. Heck, even Brian Burke could likely do the job.

...because GM's know the business and can deal in large sums of money. Canadian GM's would hopefully appreciate having more Canadian competition which would create more rivalries and attendance (which isn't a problem in Canada right now) p.s. Richard Peddie and Ken King aren't GM's...

problem with #4 is that he is not a lawyer.... kinda sucks that he didn't go to college to play hockey and get a either a law or business degree.....because if he had, he make a good commish... another pick is john davidson....he'll make a good commish.....

Being a lawyer isn't mandatory to become the NHL commissioner... Has it helped Bettman understand how to do his job...ummm...no...

i don't think being a lawyer is necessary at all...however, i do think being of very high intelligence and being familiar with business issues and possessing leadership/communication skills is absolutely necessary...i would not choose an ex-hockey player unless he possessed the above and somehow demonstrated it that in his post-hockey career...i think Dryden is a candidate if Bettman will only retire or find a new job soon...the sooner the better...

i think its just as important that the commisioner be a hockey fan too. bettman knew nothing about the game or about the history, it made me sick!!

this thread includes some misnomers saying bettman and goodenow destoyed the league.
it was the OWNERS that hired bettman in the first place.......it was the OWNERS wanted bettman because the NBA had a salary cap and was the most popular sports league in the US at that time.
the OWNERS felt he could duplicate successes of the NBA to the NHL....
bob goodenow did not destroy the NHL.....he was brought in the clean up the place caused by ALAN EAGLESON who cheated the players and kept salaries down in the NHL for years.....

Bob Goodenow went way too far with his tactics... you can say the same for alan eagleson... i don't know why this guy gets a pass but goodenow gets dumped??? did you like the way eagleson treated nhl players? or you were to young to notice his shady dealings? you need to read russ conway, his book is called game misconduct....all about eagleson's illegal dealings.... if alan eagleson wasn't so shady...... bob goodenow would not be needed.......

Eagleson was a crook...he went to jail...no use in making the comparison...both did damage in their own way...Goodenow was good for the players initially but just went too far and ended up costing the players over 1 billion in salaries and the fans an entire season...
