Why does everyone rip on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ? Everytime someone needs to make a list of AHL cities to dump on, W-B/S is always on the list among the top. Darren even did it on the main page! Are the baby penguins that offensive? I'm just curious how it got singled out among the others.

Probaby because of the rather unorthodox city name(s)...?

It sounds like a little redneck town in the middle of nowhere.
Ooooh, this is it; clash of the titans! Manitoba vs. (drum roll)... Wilkes-Barre/Scranton!! Eat your heart our Red Sox-Yankees and Leafs-Habs!!
And I find it sickening and pathetic that a town like Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (although I'm sure its lovely and has nice people) has the same level of hockey as Winnipeg, Canada.
Sickening.

Then why is it sickening and pathetic? It's in Northeast Pennsylvania, in a decent hockey state (two NHL teams), and not far from the New York State border, where several minor league and college teams make their homes and are successful. The metro area has a population of about Winnipeg's size - it isn't a hick town of any sorts. I wonder how many people in New York or Boston thought that it was pathetic that Montreal got a Major League Baseball team to compete against the likes of their beloved Yankees and Red Sox.

Carolina Hurricanes - Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill. I think they should rename the team the East Penn Penguins, or something like that...

The 2000 population of the Scranton-Wilkes Barre-Hazleton, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Area was 624,776. It's not much smaller than Winnipeg.

It's the whole "/" thing that does it for me. Just call it one or the other...the Wilkes-Barre Penguins or the Scranton Penguins. I hate teams that have "regional" names so East Penn, not a fan of. Incidentally, their AAA-level baseball team reverses it and are the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. Weird, huh?
