THIS WEEKS UPDATES - I will post the results every week...
(CP) - The Calgary Flames are in the playoffs, the first team to book its ticket to the post-season in The Canadian Press' simulated NHL season.
The Flames (43-18-7, 93 points) have dominated the league in games simulated for The Canadian Press by Electronic Arts, using its made-in-Vancouver NHL 2005 game. Calgary stumbled to a 3-1 loss against Chicago this week but rallied to beat New Jersey 2-1 and Columbus 3-1.
St. Louis (39-17-11, 89 points) and Detroit (39-18-10, 88 points) both enjoyed good weeks and moved past Colorado (39-21-8, 86 points) in the overall league standings.
The Ottawa Senators (37-22-9, 83 points) are fifth, followed by the Vancouver Canucks (33-21-15, 81 points). The Senators enjoy a nine-point cushion over their closest Eastern rival, the Florida Panthers (32-27-10, 74 points).
The Red Wings were unstoppable on the week, defeating Phoenix 4-3, Columbus 3-2, Tampa Bay 3-2 and San Jose 2-1.
Captain Steve Yzerman contributed three goals and an assist while Brendan Shanahan had a goal and four assists. Manny Legace earned all four wins in goal.
The Sens handed Toronto another dose of misery with a 2-1 win before blanking Pittsburgh 2-0. Dominik Hasek outduelled Ed Belfour in a battle of geezer goalies with former Leaf Mikael Renberg rubbing salt in the Toronto wound with a goal against his former mates.
Dany Heatley scored for slumping Toronto (27-32-10, 64 points), which stands tied with Tampa for eighth in the East. In other games this week, the Leafs tied Florida 1-1 and were beaten 4-2 by Vancouver and 2-1 by Buffalo.
The poor showing means Toronto is now just three points ahead of Montreal (25-33-11, 61 points), which occupies the Northeast Division basement.
In the West, the Canucks were beaten 5-3 by Boston and tied the Flyers 3-3 before righting the ship with a 3-2 win over Columbus and 4-2 decision over Toronto.
The Electronic Arts simulation uses the 2002-03 schedule, since this season's dates weren't out when the latest version of the game was finished.
