if true north allowed someone to lease the MTS Centre they could expect...
lease $ 800,000 ($25K per regular season home date x36) full concessions & parking = $ 800,000 ($5 per fan @ 5,000 fans)
= $ 1,600,000 in possible revenues - not to mention the fact the building would be used an additional 36 times minimum per year.
Winnipeg WHL Business Plan: solely gate revenues.
expenses: lease $ 800,000 operating expenses: $ 1,100,000
revenues: presuming ticket prices in lower bowl of $ 18,15,12, & 9 for an average price of $ 13
4,060 fans per game = $ 1,900,000 revenues = break even point 5,000 fans per game = $ 2,340,000 revenues = $ 440,000 team profit 6,500 fans per game = $ 3,042,000 revenues = $ 1,142,000 profit 8,000 fans per game = $ 3,744,000 revenues = $ 1,844,000 profit
playoff dates add an additional $ 40-80K net profit after $25K lease payment per game and based on 5K-8K attendance.
True North would be basically guaranteed $ 1.6 million in additional revenues at 5,000 fans per game, with the potential to make much more from playoff dates and additional fans.
The Wpg WHL team, although not receiving any concessions & arena sponsorship is still a very viable business enterprise. It would be complementary to the True North business plan, as I believe there are two distinct fan bases (although with a healthy cross over market), so I fail to see why Chipman is preventing Winnipeggers from having a WHL team.

Your numbers tend to tell the story there. I think it would be super easy to atleast draw 4.5 so 5000 isn't that far of a stretch. I really wish that we could expand and get ourselves a team, it would be the best hockey we've seen since the IHL days of the Moose (if some of you want to consider that a high caliber hockey).

Chipman is desperate to build up the Moose fanbase.
He brings a WHL team to Winnipeg, suddenly there's a big decrease in Moose fans in Winnipeg.
THAT is why he'll never allow a competing hockey team to make their home at the MTS Centre.
Calgary has the NHL, WHL, and NLL in the Saddledome, but this is crappy Winnipeg - we should be happy we have just the Vancouver Canucks "up and comers". I'm pretty sure that's how Chipman thinks.

No, Chipman first and foremost has a business venture. Any smart businessman will do whatever he can to promote his product at the expense of the competing products. As such, a businessman won't willfully give his own product undue competition. Like him or not, Chipman is a businessman with a product to profit from. And in business, you look out for yourself and your product first, then the rest of the community. I know many people out there would like a WHL team, but to Chipman, it doesn't make economic sense. He doesn't have a responsibility for providing Winnipeg with that product. If you were in his shoes, you'd do the same thing.

So how come the NLL, NHL, and WHL all get along so good in Calgary?

So how come the NLL, NHL, and WHL all get along so good in Calgary? Well, the NHL Flames basically own the WHL Hitmen (ie Harley Hotchkiss), so the owners aren't losing any money if one team is doing better than the other as far as attendance, etc. Not sure about the NLL, but I'm certain they pay a nice price to the seven investors who have control over the Saddledome, Hitmen and Flames. Obviously, if it were in Chipman's best interest to bring another team to Winnipeg, he'd do so. But it obviously isn't, at least not right now. Simple economics: don't do something you can't afford. I can't speak for him, so I won't speculate any further - there's enough of that around here anyways. I'd tell you to ask himself, but his email address is not on the website. He received threatening emails when the Eaton's building was in the process of being torn down, and one glance at these boards would be reason enough for him not to make such information public knowledge again.

Again, I don't know his reasons. I'd ask him, but I can't. I can't seem to find the email addresses for any of Calgary's owners on their website. I'd bet a good number of executives across any league don't publicize their emails. Owners like Mark Cuban are rare, unfortunately.

the irony in Chipman's case is he had no probem taking $ 40.5 million in public money, but won't make himself accessible to the public.

and sadly you are right about owners not being as open as Cuban.
but even Leonsis and Leopold are highly accessible NHL owners. perhaps Chipman believes in the the Jeremy Jacobs/Bill Wirtz public relations and marketing strategies ?

So how come the NLL, NHL, and WHL all get along so good in Calgary? Money... There is enough money in Calgary that all these teams can survive, simply because Calgary is drowing in coin. They also have a area population of 1,100,000, and the fastest-growing city in Canada.
