I haven't been inside it yet, but they built it in the worst area of town. Anyone who says they won't go to an event at the MTS Centre because they are afraid of the panhandlers downtown make me laugh.
Try going through 118th and Wayne Gretzky Drive. The area is flooded with hookers and drug dealers. It is the "Selkirk and Salter" of Edmonton, yet 17,000+ pack the arena each game.

Well for starters, the LRT only goes from the U of A (close to Downtown) to the Northeast Area of Edmonton. If youo look at a map of the city, that is a very small percentage of people that are within walking distance to it.
Secondly, it is miles away from all of Western edmonton, so all those people will travel by cars. It does not really serve most of the south either. How are people from the Millwoods, St Albert, Sherwood Park, and Northwest Edmonton going to use the LRT. My guess is that the LRT is only practical to 150,000 residents of a Metro area of over 1,000,000 people.

i live in edmonton.......and i agree...the lrt has very limited use....and that is a crappy area of town... (live close to it ....the first time i tried to find parking around there for the roadrunners opener....holy crap...i freaked...and was so frustrated...but once i found parking...it wasn't a bad walk...it was like parking at the old canadian tire (in winnipeg) and walking to the arena....now that i know the area...it's not so bad....

Millwoods!!!! It would take forever to get from Millwoods to Rexall Place! I was billetted their during the Edmonton Fringe last summer and it took an hour by bus to get to Whyte ave! Never mind the other side of the city!!! Millwoods ruled though!! Go suburbs!

theres asian gangs in millwoods. Edmonton does not seem nearly as bad as Winnipeg in terms of crime. 118th and 95 th seems to be the worst part of the city, and it can't hold a candle to Selkirk and Salter. Although I've only been to Millwoods twice, it reminds me of River Park South.

Well, it has been going up in recent years... Crime hasn't been going up in recent years. It is people's PERCEPTION of crime that is skyrocketing. You have FOX news, CNN, etc to thank for that. Violent crime is at a lower rate today than it was in 1990.

It didnt seem to me like it was THAT bad of an area..but kind of a different place for an NHL arena. It didnt seem that hard to get to though...although I don't remember many detials of the area/how to get there. Either way, it was a pretty nice arena and has a great atmosphere.
But, the MTS Centre isnt a bad area either. Yes its downtown, and isn't the BEST area around, but come on. Oilers can pack almost 17 000, basically full...we should be able to get solid crowds (not huge capacity, but sell almost all the seats out) as well in our nice, new arena, if/when an NHL team comes back to the peg.
