Many teams have corporate sponsors for anything that takes place during a game, or for any announcements. Goals, power plays, penalty kills, goals, the out-of-town scoreboard, the end-of-period highlights, etc, etc.
For companies that sign up, they get their name announced over the PA ("Penalty to Vancouver #44 Todd Bertuzzi. Two minutes for elbowing.... Time for the Jets MTS POWER PLAY!!!"), and their corporate logo displayed on the scoreboard and the power ring during the PP.
I know being bombarded with ads isn't a pleasant experience, but let's face it, it's going to happen anyway. This is a way for them to increase their ad revenue over and above the usual signage.

I think this already happens. When the Moose score on the PP the announcer says "MTS Powerplay goal" I think

Well they could take it a step further...
"This 1st period intermission is brought to you by Quiznos!"
"This stoppage in play is brought to you by Gondola Pizza!"
"This delay-of-game penalty is brought to you by Mind Computer Products!"
"This face-off is brought to you by Clodhoppers Candy!"
"This post-game cleaning of the ice by the zamboni is brought to you by Labatt!"
and so on, and so forth.

It already happens guys... in Ottawa, they have sponsors for the power play (Cognos), penalty kill (various), goals ("Jubilee Jewellers Rolex time of the goal was 15:23"), the end of period highlights on the Jumbotron, the out of town scoreboard, the 3 stars (Molson) as well as a game sponsor. They also show trivia questions and "greatest hits" highlights during the TV timeouts and those are sponsored, too.
I'm not a fan of being bombarded with ads at a hockey game, but I thought this would be a good idea to raise some extra dough that doesn't come directly from the fans' pockets. Besides, you're already looking at rink board ads for the whole game anyway.

Thats true enough about the board ads and even the on ice ads, I think it comes to a point that the fans tune out, If I was a sponser I don't know how willing I would be to do it, unless each game was sponsered by someone different. Like Birchwood Nissan powerplay goal, Birchwood GM shorthanded goal!!
