Example:
The 1st annual Winnipeg Jets Sports Carnival moves to its brand new home this weekend when the brand new MTS Centre will be home to all kinds of fun activities for children and parents.
Kelly McArthur, the Executive Director of the Winnipeg Jets Yearling Foundation, is excited about what this year’s carnival has to offer Jets fans.
“The newest part is the new venue,” says McArthur, who hopes to see 15,000 take in the carnival. “I think there will more interest to check it out and take a sneak peak at the new arena. The dressing rooms are places people don’t normally get to see, but at the carnival there will be a neat opportunity to take a tour of the dressing rooms, which are really quite something.”
One of the main attractions at the carnival is the Jets signature “Mystery Boxes.” A gigantic pile of boxes are stacked in a huge pyramid on a stage, and each box contains a gift valued between $50 - $500. The boxes themselves cost only $20.
McArthur suggests that people interested in purchasing a mystery box should get to the carnival early.
There will be no shortage of fun activities at the carnival, where you can meet your favourite Jet player, play all kinds of fun games like ring toss, foosball and spin a prize. Kids can take a ride on a giant slide or try their hockey skills to see if they can score on a professional goaltender. BENNY will be on hand, as will clowns to entertain the kids, there will be face painting and balloon animals to take home.
Another popular part of the carnival is the silent auction. McArthur says most of the prizes are kid themed like a child’s sized Jets jersey or the chance to be a fire chief for a day.
“One of the silent auction prizes is the chance to be an equipment manager for the Jets for a game.”
The MTS Centre opens its doors for the Winnipeg Jets Carnival at 12 noon.

Well the annual "Moose Carnival" was yesterday... I'm pretty sure only 11 or so people showed up, but the fact of the matter is they made a few bucks!
And a yearly "Jets Carnival" at the MTS Centre will make some nice money for a new Winnipeg NHL team too. I've no doubts of this.

That would have oppertunity to be very lucrative. They could have alot of cash grabs within the the Carnival, and build alot of fan support while doing it. Not to mention Ticket Sales. This would also be a great time to promote next seaons Season Ticket Sales, and more.
To do it right... I think they would have to take FULL advantage of the concourse room, so they could sell the most possible tickets to the event. and earn a LOT of money of ticket sales alone. Write it into the player contracts, that way the only really added expense would be paying the employees. (which would be EASILY made up for). A 25% off voucher for concession on the ticket price, That would cause people to NOT go out for lunch, and buy Lunch at the concessions. Even if it is expensive as heck, they would think there were really somthing because they got a deal. Then a HUGE focus on auctions. A few Game Worn Jerseys, and a few Game used Sticks, Maybe a Game worn Goalie Mask, some Game worn gloves, Game worn player helmet, etc. Auctions alone would be able to bring in a revenue of likely over 150 grand. Prize boxes at $20.00 each with donated stuff in them would get everyone buying them. Sponcers. Businesses would pay to have banners, and what not hung, etc. Pay to rent out a spot in there. Ex. Sony could pay the owner $15000 to let them have a booth set up with a Enormous home entertainment system set up. then a 50/50 like draw to see who gets it. Sony get half the money, Jets get the other half, and Sony gets crazy amounts of advertising. Video Games, Hardest Slap Shot games, shoot on the goalies, etc. stuff set up. You gotta buy tickets to play, and everyone would want to do that.
IT has so much potentail... If this was NHL, and we had star players, i can bet there is potential to bring in almost a million in revenue from a carnival alone...

Hang on a second - wasn't the original Jets carnival for the Goals For Kids charity?
I'm all for making money, but I think some goodwill in the community is important, too. Something like this should be a charity event, not a cash grab.

A % of the profit would go to charity.

No way. The annual carnival is for charity and charity alone. It is a way for the players and organization to give back to the community.
That would be one cheesy way to create revenue.

I think you're both wrong.
Y'see, when the NHL comes to Winnipeg, I think people here will realize that the team will have to generate revenue any way it can to stay and flourish in this city.
I don't think it would be "cheesy" to give 50% of the profits from a "Jets Carnival" at the MTS Centre to charity.
Some of you MUST understand in order for our new Jets to be a competitive, profitable franchise, they'll have to squeeze every dollar it can from the people who are fans of the team.
I have absolutely no doubts this is an NHL city and an NHL team here would flourish... but we'll need a lot more than 15,000 tickets sold for every game in order to be a competitive team.

You have come up with some great revenue ideas, but this is simply one I don't agree with. It has historically been a "charity" event. I think all teams have an annual carnival, but I doubt they profit from it. The team can make money off the concessions, but nothing else....in my opinion.

Ok, say we have a "Jets Carnival" at the MTS Centre when the Jets come back, and the print ads and t.v. commercials state that "$5 from every ticket sold (assume tix will be $10) will go to _________ (fill in charity of choice here)"
Cheesy?
I personally don't think so.
But you're entitled to your opinion.
Plenty of other ways to make cash... some of which are on this very forum!

Personally, I agree with the few who think such an event should be for the kids, or for charity. Sports teams everywhere do things, free of charge, for charities... they're role models in their communities, and as such, they give back when they can, without asking for anything.
Taking 50% of proceeds from a traditionally charitable event and using them to sign their fourth defenseman to a new deal is like canvassing door-to-door for cancer research, raising $100 a night, and pocketing $10, because you need some extra cash too, and, dammit, you put in the effort. Sure, $90 is still going to a good cause, but the $10 should've too.

Well maybe I'll just shut my mouth MOC and stop thinking of ways a new Winnipeg NHL team can generate revenue.
What do I know? I'm an idiot.

I'm not the first one to disagree with you about this, yet my argument deserves the sarcasm and cynicism...? I don't get it. This is a public message board. A place to bounce ideas off of one another. Not everyone will agree with everything. Get over it. You won't always have the right answer or the best ideas, and neither will I. Like you wrote to Believer: "But you're entitled to your opinion."
