In addition to having a "Jets Channel" specifically for Pay-per-view Jet games, MTS T.V. could also have an additional channel called "Classic Jets" which would air games/highlights/interviews, etc. of the 1972-1996 Winnipeg Jets. It would be available for a small monthly/yearly fee, and also available via webcast on the official Winnipeg Jets site. There could be "special offers" too... order a Jets game off of PPV and you get a free week of the "Classic Jets" channel on MTS T.V. Order a webcast Jets game off of www.WinnipegJets.com and you could to choose a FREE "Classic Jets" game to watch via webcast... every home playoff game? Check. Teemu Selanne's rookie goal scoring record game? Check. SO many possibilites it boggles the mind.

i'd prefer a partnership with another company since mts tv doesn't reach a very broad audience as of yet. i would prefer the games to be able to be broadcasted province wide as well as to reach into neighboring regions like north west ontario and maybe saskatchewan. mts tv might be ok though once they reach into all regions of the province or if the channel was available on other cable providers.

Now then, this new idea isn't as radical as my previous ones. I actually got this idea from the WWE website. You can watch old WWE pay-per-views from the 80's and 90's (actually it might just be single matches and not 3 hr. pay-per-view events) via website on their website for a few dollars. So I was thinking when the NHL returns to Winnipeg, you could watch old Jets games via webcast on their official site for a very small fee ($1.50-$5.00). Let's face it... computers are becoming more and more widely used and accepted every day. And almost all of today's modern computers can display t.v.-quality broadcasts. I feel there would be many, many Jets fans all over the world that would pay for this... and again, as with my other "revenue source" ideas, this feature would be available for ANYONE ON THE PLANET with an internet connection. Simply go to www.WinnipegJets.com (or whatever it's called), and choose from a large selection of old Winnipeg Jets games from 1979 until 1996 (incl. ALL home playoff games of course ), pay the small fee (via credit card), and voila! Nearly 3 hrs. of high quality entertainment. Got a few hours to spare? Get comfortable in front of your computer with your favourite beverage and a tasty snack, punch in your credit card number, and relive some old-school Jets games... commercial free, right on your computer screen in the comfort of your home!

You have to have a population base that actually cares about the team passionately to have a TV channel dedicated to a team. 1000 people watching isn't going to cut it.

I think this works for the WWE because 1) they have a large fanbase spread all over North America and 2) they own all the footage they are streaming.
With the Jets, they would have an audience mainly concentrated to one region, and since the team doesn't own the footage to the games, this would have to be purchased. Add in the bandwidth costs and I'm not sure it could work especially with the low prices you would have to charge.

it will only make money if Canwest does what ted turner does in the states in televising his braves. Since Global in nationwide it may work but I am guessing not many outside cities would like it, due to the fact global would be pro jets like cbc is pro leafs and canadiens. But who cares lets do what TUrner broadcasting does and make the Jets canadas team. ;D

I agree with charon2000, yes it would be great to have global broadcast the jets, but we all know that southern ont controls all the media, I don't any money would be made. It be better to have MTS centre expanded to 17500 seats, if all seats were sold , that would mean an extra 100,000 tickets sold through out the 40 game schedule. Just an idea?

Because I believe our new team will have a large fansbase OUTSIDE of Winnipeg, I believe this will make money.

Because I believe our new team will have a large fansbase OUTSIDE of Winnipeg, I believe this will make money. It could possibly make money depending on who holds the rights to these games. I am sure it is the NHL and would this revenue have to be shared with all the other teams. For instance, who gets the revenue generated from all the classic games shown on NHL network?

No, not with the other 29 NHL clubs... this is on MTS t.v. (based out of Winnipeg), on the Jets pay-per-view specialty channel, and specificially featuring WINNIPEG NHL games... if the NHL receives *any* compensation for this, I expect it to be minimal.

I've seen old games on the NHL Classic program on NHLTV. I almost cried watching Dave Ellott score to put the Jets up 3 games to 1 on Edmonton. Sadly, with a population base as low as ours and limited numbers of fans outside Winnipeg, a dedicated Jets channel would likely still be too costly to operate. I could be wrong, but I don't think too many people outside Manitoba would really pick up on this?...

Although MTS TV really limits how far you can broadcast the games, I think some of you guys really underestimate the number of fans ANY NHL team will have worldwide. Of course winners have more fans than losers. I remember people thinking my Penguins jersey was a joke back in the late 70's and early 80's (when they were my favourite team.) Once they became a winner, people all over the world, including here in Winnipeg became Pens fans and you can still see Pens jerseys and caps all over town. I would estimate 100's of thousands if not millions of fans worldwide who have no other connection to Pittsburgh.
Therefore webcasting seems a logical way to go with this idea to promote the Jets history worldwide and get access to a potential worldwide revenue source. Theoretically seems like a good idea anyway but maybe I overestimate the possibilities too.
