Personally I'm all for a new stadium. I think Canad Inns has been renovated just about as much as it can.

I'm still undecided. I would rather have an more "open" stadium. The toilet bowl design looks too enclosed. Putting a hotel in the endzone is rather cheezy too.
I guess I am old school, but part of the fun of watching the Bombers play was seeing people braving the elements, wearing Parkas, toques, etc. It had more of a "football feel" to it that I cannot explain. Trust me, Ive been to BC Place and Skydome. The experience is way better in the current stadium...

YES, a brand new stadium, should be built, for the Bombers. The Old, Winnipeg/Canad Inns Stadium, has seen its years, and served it purpose, much like the old Winnipeg Arena.
The present Bombers stadium is getting old, and it was built in around about 1953.
By renovating it, would be just throwing good money away. And for Bombers to continue to compete, in the CFL, they need a new climate controlled stadium.
Most other CFL teams have a new stadium, now it is Bombers turn to get one.
Which also reminds me, since Winnipeg will be hosting the 2006 Grey Cup, then 2005 will have to be the rebuilding year of Bombers. Therefore, Mr. Lyle Bauer and company, have got their work cut out for themselves. By starting this year of 2005, of rebuilding their Grey Cup Champs, for 2006.
Let's hope, that the new Bomber stadium, will be ready, by then.
In addition to that, come 2006, that by then, OUR BELOVED JETS, will be back by, or before then, pending how long the NHL Lockout, holds out.
The brightside to this NHL Lockout is, that, the longer it takes to restart the NHL again, the longer the players, will be out.
Which in turn, will mean that the players salaries will have to be reduced, and the owners will be looking to another city, that will support their team.
That is where, Winnipeg could possibly benefit, because, the FAN SUPPORT is STRONG, in Winnipeg, and THAT, has been proven, OVER, and OVER.
And with the addition of a brand new, ATTRACTIVE Arena, in downtown Winnipeg, with the True North/MTS Centre.
Winnipeg, makes itself an attractive city, to host a new NHL Franchise, namely the Winnipeg Jets. The only thing that is needed, is a STRONG/ER corporate support system.
And finally, Darren, GREAT JOB, on your website, VERY NICELY done, nice touch, without to much of the frills.
Keep up the GREAT JOB, with it, and may the Jets return to Winnipeg, ASAP.
GO JETS, GO GO BOMBERS, GO
Sincerely Neill (Tom Clements #2) Johnston

The New Canad Inns Stadium is actually all but a done deal. Really all thats left is how will it look...like a toilet bowl, or a fully enclosed facility. This is long over due actually. We have a great baseball park....AAA quality actually, the MTS Centre, and it would be the crowning jewel for the Blue to get a new facility.

Gotta love the logic that when sports teams all over North America are building arenas and stadiums in or near the central core, Winnipeg goes ahead and builds one on the very edges of the city.
If Winnipeg doesn't get an NHL team for some reason, there goes downtown... again.

I guess you ran out of people to annoy at newwinnipeg.com, and decided to start fresh here?

And how exactly am I annoying you?

i'd love to see a new stadium, although i think it's a mistake to build on the edge of town.
what are the costs being discussed, and how much will taxpayers contribute ?

I believe it was somewhere in the area of $133 million, and the cost to tax payers is nominal. The majority of this is being picked up by the business partners, and levels of government.

I think building a new stadium is a great idea and the location is awesome. lots of parking easy for everyone to go and come from. The one thing they defently need is a dome. No more freezing ur but off in november.

I think the whole idea is brilliant. Even with it on the outskirts of the city. We have the perimeter hwy which will give quick easy access to commute for people who live on the other side of the city. Plus, if and when we get Rapid Transit more than likely the city will make a route to the Stadium. And besides our city is small compared to others. Try commuting in cities like Toronto or Vancouver I bet you'll think twice about it being far after you experience that.

Ask anyone living in/near downtown Vancouver of what they think of a massive sports venue a couple of streets away. You may be suprised at the responses. Arenas are ok to put downtown because they are relatively small. Football stadiums need to be put in industrial areas (i.e. Skydome), as to not disturb the communities in which they are built in...

After experiencing Canwest Global Park, and the MTS Centre, I'd say we DEFINITELY need a new stadium.
Canad Inns has been renovated to death. Why do so many people still call it Winnipeg Stadium?

Why do so many people still call it Winnipeg Stadium? Because it sounds better than CanadInns Stadium...? If it had been built CanadInns Stadium, that's what it would be called... but since it was Winnipeg Stadium for 50 odd years, it'll be Winnipeg Stadium for most people who grew up watching football there. I never use "CanadInns"... it's always "the Stadium" to me since the switch.

I wonder if the new facility will be called Canad Inns Stadium as well?
