Boob tube on buses? Last Updated Jun 15 2005 08:03 AM CDT CBC News
WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg man believes television advertising could be the key to pumping more funds into the city's struggling transit system.
With a captive audience of 120,000 riders per day, Chris Minaker thinks the advertising potential on city buses is huge.
He wants to install televisions on buses, showing about 15 minutes per hour of paid local advertising and 45 minutes of free community programming, such as items about events going on in Winnipeg.
"We could feature Folklorama. We could do a partnership with Red River College, with their journalism course. There are so many partnerships," he said.
Minaker says the community would benefit – and so would Winnipeg Transit. He estimates the advertising portion could bring in up to $20 million in revenue per year.
"That money could go back into improving transit: warmer shelters, expanded routes, more buses, quicker times. We could really do something positive here," he said.
Minaker pitched the idea to Mayor Sam Katz on Monday night. The next morning, he got a personal call from the mayor, who said he loved the idea and would have staff review the proposal.

Don't most of us already watch too much television? No thanks, I don't want it on my bus ride. If they gave headphones and made it optional listening then I could live with that.
