What does everyone think about tearing down the barriers at Portage and Main?
I'm personnaly all for it, but I thought I'd open it up for discussion.

I'm somewhat against it. It would kill off Winnipeg Square. Not to mention the number of cars passing the intersection would be a risk for pedestrians...

Keeping them up signals to everyone that cars are king in this town, and nothing will change that.
What other city anywhere has its most famous intersection blocked off to pedestrians?

I don't think it would kill off Winnipeg Square. In the winter, people will still be taking the underground route, and in the summer, if people are drawn to the area with the proposed upgrades, then it will probably increase foot traffic in Winnipeg Square.
I personnally never go to Winnipeg Square, but if the above ground area had the barriers removed, and some more shops/restaurants go up in that area like they are proposing, then I might be more inclined to go down there.
IMO, Portage and Main is the heart of downtown, and shouldn't be such an eyesore. We should start cleaning up the middle of downtown, and work outward from there.

I would like to see something like Times Square or Tokyo with biga$$ tv screens on the buildings and merchants all over Portage and Main in a post barriers era. That would rule even if traffic is a bit more backed up.

I am all for it as well, if traffic is a concern, then simply make no pedestrian crossing between 7-9 and 1530-1730 from Monday to Friday, so that traffic is not slowed down during rush-hour.
