Waterpark splash
Group to unveil details Thursday
By DAVID SCHMEICHEL, STAFF REPORTER
The developers behind a proposed waterpark and spa are keeping tightlipped about the location of their new venture, but promise the facility will combine European sensibilities and state-of-the-art leisure concepts. A recent press release from Winnipeg Eco Water World Parks Inc. spells out some preliminary details about the proposal, but co-president Ralf Klenke said interested parties will have to wait until Thursday to learn more.
"We won't be releasing the location, the logo, the design or the name until that time," Klenke said yesterday.
In yesterday's release, Klenke announced plans for a 70,000-square foot complex with a $23-million price tag, one that promises a 4,000-square-foot wave pool and several water slides towering over the park.
MINERAL SPA POOL
A nearby European Thermal Spa will feature an indoor/outdoor mineral spa pool with an underwater music cave and themed saunas and steam baths, the release says.
"The new facility will physically separate the 'leisure world' from the 'wellness world,' " Klenke said in the release. "But both worlds will be available with one ticket that will be based on a 'fun-by-the-hour' concept."
The release claimed a feasibility study has already been completed, and construction is slated to begin this summer.
The proposed facility is the second waterpark to be announced in Winnipeg in as many months.
Last December, it was announced a $165-million stadium, hospitality and recreation complex could be built at the Red River Exhibition grounds in the city's west end.
Canad Corp. CEO Leo Ledohowski, a partner in that project, couldn't be reached for comment yesterday on the Eco Water World announcement.
A media report published last week suggested the developers might be eyeing a site at the corner of McGillivray Boulevard and McCreary Road, in the RM of MacDonald.
A MacDonald spokesman confirmed yesterday that the developers have been granted conditional approval by RM council, but said Eco Water World had also been looking at other sites. The tract of land at McGillivray is just under 45 acres, while the site referenced in Eco Water World's press release is 80 acres.
The official unveiling of the new water park's name, logo, location and design takes place Thursday at 11 a.m., at the Clarion Hotel.
