Jr. hockey good news for bars
By KATHLEEN MARTENS, BUSINESS REPORTER
It's the most anticipated game of the year. Tonight's gold medal junior hockey final between Canada and Russia is expected to pack bars and lounges like any big game would.
The 12-day World Junior Hockey Championship series has been a cool drink for fans enduring a drought of National Hockey League action, said Hooters assistant general manager Rob McCorriston.
"It's the biggest hockey game of the year. That's the buzz now with customers," he said. "That's all that people are talking about."
Hooters has been raffling off autographed Team Canada jerseys every time the juniors played and will give one away again tonight.
Boston Pizza on Taylor Avenue has also been awarding jerseys throughout the series -- being held just across the border in Grand Forks, N.D. -- and will make another fan happy at the full house expected tonight, said manager Erin Kingerski.
Traffic has been steady, and patrons are watching the games in the restaurant and lounge, Kingerski said.
FANS NOT DISAPPOINTED
"People are hyped about it," she said of the gold-medal game, "but I wouldn't compare it to the Stanley Cup."
Tavern United sports bar is giving away box seats for eight to a Manitoba Moose game to one Canada junior-watching fan tonight, said manager Ali Soko.
The club has been busy throughout the tournament, and fans haven't been disappointed. "Canada's doing so well," Soko said.
It's true the hockey has kept regulars happy but it hasn't made up for the lack of NHL, said Troy Jeffrey, general manager of Smitty's on Meadowood Drive, who is expecting a full house tonight.
Once the Super Bowl is over, Jeffrey predicts bars are going to be hurting for sports.
"What are we going to show?" he said.
Derek Campbell, owner of Boogie's Diner & Sports Lounge, is preparing to offer fans computerized trivia games once the NFL wraps up, as well as hoops action.
"There's always the NBA. Hopefully, we can create a little basketball fever," he said.
