Concert Hall bosses to gain more power
By Pat St. Germain
Centennial Concert Hall management will be masters of their domain under proposed legislation to loosen financial restrictions for the 2,300-seat venue. Under the changes, the hall could host and promote its own events or co-sponsor extended runs of shows. For example, if a promoter were willing to risk a one-night stand, concert hall management could co-sponsor a second show and assume part of the risk.
"We have tried to convince people to put on a second show. We know the market here a little better," Manitoba Centennial Centre Corp. executive director Bob Sochasky says.
The proposed changes to the Centennial Centre Corporation Act governing the 36-year-old Crown corporation would also allow the concert hall to retain a profit and borrow money for development projects.
Since MCCC owns three surface parking lots near the hall, including a large Rupert Street lot next to the Manitoba Museum, a parking structure could be one development. Sochasky said there's demand for parking in the evening for concert hall, Pantages Playhouse and MTC events.
Sochasky said there are no plans yet to promote a specific show.
"We're treading on new ground here ... we'll go cautiously."
