Condos in St. Boniface approved
By STAFF
A controversial condominium complex will be built on Tache Avenue in St. Boniface, despite protests by opponents. Council's appeals committee decided yesterday to allow the $12-million development on the east bank of the Red River, after hearing several opponents argue the building would ruin the historic and cultural flavour of old St. Boniface.
That means construction on the complex -- its eight storeys and 62 units almost completely sold -- will begin likely next spring next to St. Boniface Museum and the historic St. Boniface Basilica.
Parks Canada and the Manitoba Historical Society are among the opponents who say the modern complex won't fit well with neighbouring properties, though members of the Grey Nuns and other religious orders said the district needs such housing.
Condos at the non-profit complex -- developed by members of the Knights of Columbus for residents ages 50 and over -- have been snapped up at prices of up to about $250,000, proponents say.
Scores of supporters celebrated after the committee made its decision following about five hours of arguments.
The building has been designed by Gaboury Prefontaine Perry, the architectural firm behind the $22-million Esplanade Riel footbridge.

OMG, always with the historical society.
Who cares, you can't not ever build new things... and why, because it clashes, lol

I've seen the blueprints and artist conception. It looks terrible beside two historical landmarks. They should have put it anywhere else.
