Selinger denounces 'have-not' label for Manitoba
The Provincial Finance Minister feels the have-not label for Manitoba is unfair.
Saskatchewan is joining Ontario and Alberta as the only so-called "have" provinces not relying on federal equalization payments.
Minister Greg Selinger says Manitoba's neighbour to the west is in this spot because of the price of certain resources, namely gas, oil and potash.
Selinger adds the have-not label is inapropriate because the transfer system allows provinces to ivest in needed programs.
Saskatchewan is projecting a 289 million dollar surplus.
CJOB's Jeff Keele reporting.
----------------- Heads up! Saskatchewan may surpass Manitoba's population in the next few years. I know this isnt about winnipeg but ya know....

Don't worry, Saskatchewan won't be surpassing Manitoba's population anytime soon. According to the latest figures, Manitoba has 1,170,000 people and Saskatchewan has 994,000. A difference of 176,000. And the margin between Manitoba and Saskatchewan is slowly getting bigger. I heard that Saskatchewan is starting to lose more people again, can anyone confirm this??

It's very likely that Saskatchewan is losing population if you look here: www.statcan.ca/english/Pgdb/demo05a.htm you can see that Sakatoon only gained 4000 from 2000-2004 and that Regina only gained 600 people more than in 2000 and lost population in 2001 and 2002 yet winnipeg has gained 16000 since 2000, 3.5 times more than Regina AND Saskatoon combined so i DOUBT saskatchewan will pass Manitoba

Sask it a resource hinterland... Primary extraction of oil gas and potash requires little labour with today's mechanization. Sask also does lose people.
would you really pack up and move to Sask because the oil, gas and potash prices are making them money.... on the global market, these things fluctuate so fast that before you know it... there goes your projected surplus. Plus being non-renewable resources.. means one day they'll be gone. Furthermore, the don't have to cities to spin off much corporate development like Alberta did.

Also, sask had much less oil and gas... I mean a fraction of the amount that Alberta has. So why go there when right next door there is so much more

Population of Winnipeg city : 648, 300 Population of Winnipeg CMA : 702, 400
The Census metropolitan Area is strange. It includes some municipalities, but excludes others. East St Paul, Oakbank, Starbuck, Headingley, Lorette, Niverville, and West St Paul are included in the CMA. however towns like Stonewall, La Salle, Stony Mountain, and Selkirk are not.

no I dont think they do if they did wpg's area would be in the millions ;D the Winnipeg Capital region (Winnipeg & the surrounding area within a 50 km radius) has roughly 750,000 peopel, so Winnipeg would NOT be even close to 1,000,000 people. the enitre province has only 1,170,000.

Exactly. And once Mb hydro builds that dam with ontario, the province economy will be even stronger. I really hope this city and province brings in more people with brains and money so we can move-on to beeing a have province.
