The owners want linkage. That's all. They would forget about the whole arbitration thing if they had linkage simply because if there wasn't enough revenue, arbitration would be meaningless, if there was more revenue, the players would get more anyways.
The players want their salaries to have no ceilings. Well, this can't work. In every league there are caps, some soft like MLB and some hard like NFL.It doesn't work in the MLB except for the few teams that sell out every game due to population. The NFL is making a ton of cash and we all know that the NFLPA will be wanting more money since the NFL owners are running away like crooks.
But, back to the NHL problem. Their TV deals are terrible, many teams are bringing in terrible attendance figures that will get worse the longer this lockout is for. The league will be hurting for a while to come, that's known for sure. Contraction could happen and that will hurt as well. It would hurt because if teams contract, reasons could be given to go against putting a team in Winnipeg due to history.
So who's doomed?
For me it's too early to say. If the NHL can get replacement players then the Union is doomed, if they don't then both are doomed.
If the players get their way, the NHL will have to allow a higher cap, teams will fold. Winnipeg will never have a hope to get a team back and a few Canadian teams would be gone too.
The players can't win in the long run.

In my honest opinion no one will be "losing" when a new deal is put in place. Both sides are going to need to reach a compromise so it won't be like one side is robbing a blind man or anything. A fair deal for both sides will be implimented. They've already locked out one year, I'm sure they wouldn't mind another if it means working out the kinks to make a fair deal. If anything, it will be the whole NHL who is doomed when it closes its' doors forever.

comprimise? Both sides have now veered far off already. Supposedly the players didn't want a cap? We all know they would go for one but wouldn't say so publically.
The owners went high on a cap. 12 million over what they wanted.
I think a compromise is a win for the owners and a loss for the PA. Look at it this way.
Salary Cap - Owners Arbitration - Owners Luxury Tax - Owners Revenue Sharing - Owners.
some owners will win in all four areas. A compromise will benefit the owners more. I say that's almost fair as the players have been robbing the owners and the fans blind for years.
You tell me how Chris Pronger deserved what he signed before the lockout? The guy is terrible.
The NFL will be in trouble soon because the players will want linkage, but the NHL players want to stay far away. Shows how much support they have in their own sport. They don't even care about hockey anymore, just their wallets.
