I was watching a re-run of OTR, where 2 guys were trying to defend the players.
They say the game is broken, and it is being fixed at the players expense.
They say, Its the owners fault that they paid them salaries that high in the first place.
They say if the game needs to be fixed, the commish (bettman) can't completley aline with the owners, he should represend both the owners and the players.
I wanted to know what you guys think is the players defence.... Why they are right, and the owners are wrong.
I was personally get VERY fustrated with these guys... I will admit, he has valid points in MOST circumstances. but for every rule there is an exception.
If i work for a company that brings in a total of 500000/year i cant expect to be paid 600000/year. Its plane and simple... There is not enough demand for hockey to pay these guys the money they want. IT IS PLAIN AND SIMPLE. There is no arguing with that, they are way over paid, and there needs to be more than just a roll back! A Salary cap won't finx the NHL, but it will be a hell of a start.
In a perfect situation, the commis should act as a person who is going to be fair to both sides, and look at each situation from 2 perspectives. Well, to be honest i think he is, and he thinks the players arguement is completley absurd so he is saying no no and nope.
Its the owners fault that they agreed to pay the players that much in the first place... Well sure, they are the ones who signed the deal. They made a mistake, and if they didn't the players probably would have just ran to another team, but still... Either way, the owners admit they are over paying the players, and they are tryign to fix the problem. If i re-word that, the players are refusing to let the owners fix a mistake they made...
One of the guys also said that the "no guarnteed contracts" its bogus because in the NFL the players play like garbage then get cut... its unfair to sign them to a big 8 year deal then cut them after 1 week when they play like garbage.
I SAY - sure it would suck if you got all excited for a 1.5 million dollar contract and then you got cut after 1 week... BUT then you should make sure you dont play like garbage. OTHERWISE YOU DESERVE TO BE CUT!!!
They also tryed to blame the league for having to many teams... etc. etc. Basically these guys went on and on trying to find each and every technacality to find the owners at fault, or anything/anyone besides the players.... they are searching for a scapegoat, and it aggrovates me.
I will admit, the owners are putting alot of blame on the players, and the players are not the only reason the game is screwed, and more needs to be done. BUT YOU MUST START SOMEWHERE! Salaries have spyrolled out of control, and they need to be put at an appropriate number. It really is that simple. THen you can move into the problem that games lack excitement, ok take out the redline !! (NO MORE TRAP PLEASE!!!) then say, ok hockey just doesn't work in these towns, maybe a minor league team, but they just dont have the interest for the majors. Lets relocate some teams (Here you go Winnipeg, here is the team you deserve). Problems must be delt with 1 at a time, right now they are dealing with player salaries.
