Players should take $45M: Cherry
By CP
TORONTO -- Don Cherry believes he has a way to end the NHL lockout. Simply, give the NHL players a salary cap of $45 million US.
'DEAL TO BE MADE'
"That's the key," Cherry told the Globe and Mail. "If the league goes high enough and somehow the players can get over that salary cap word, there's a deal to be made.
"I'm for the players but if they can't live with $45 million, then there's something wrong. It's ridiculous and they're on their own."
The NHL and NHL Players' Association are at a standoff over the league's demand for a hard salary cap, a payroll limit that could not be exceeded.
The players argue that a hard cap would restrict their earning power but seem amendable to a soft cap, in which a fine or tax would be levied on a club that went over the salary limit.
This week, the NHL reportedly offered the players a $42-million hard cap, which was the average for club payrolls last season. It was rejected.
The league's original cap proposal, reportedly, was at the $31-million level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hate how they can't see eye to eye...

When i first read a post you made on another thread regarding a $45 mil USD salary cap i was like WHAT?!?!?! What was Don Cherry thinking??? why would he think 45 mil is resonable?
but now that i read this, i see that he has a point...
The only problem is, i think that 45 mil is so high, it wont help the cause much...
grrr, frustrating how people are saying how underpaid they are at 6 or 7 million... Honestly...

I think a 45 Million cap would be good. It is a bit high, but you don't HAVE to reach that point. It only gives you the option. Yes is means the players have more room to push their weight around for more money... but if the owners go this far, I doubt much pushing will happen.
There are also other opinions about a minimum cap.. I HATE this idea. If a team can operate properly, with a quality team... then let them.

What are Winnipegs chances of getting a team with the cap that high. Sure we can have a lower team cap like 32million but how do you stay competive with the toronto's and detroits of the nhl. I dont wanna see the league be like basball were's it's always the yankee's and red sox fighting it out. The poor blue jays. They'll never make the playoofs again.
