With Goodenows latest memo to players telling them to find jobs in other leagues, it seems that there is no NHL for a long time.
What I find so upsetting is that Normally union bosses don't tell their membership to go find other jobs, but then again, this is no normal union. Goodenow is trying to find the best deal for the players, I know that, and Bettman is trying to find the best deal for the owners, all that is true. However, one ideal is missing.
In a Lockout or strike, the reason for one in the first place is a disagreement on how things should be done and what the compensation should be, IE, pay raises, benefits, diciplinary actions, etc. Neither side gets what they totally want usually and there is a comprimise. Both sides of the NHL have to understand this, but they don't.
The owners want a hard cap, union doesn't = Do a soft cap with major penalties and then a hard cap ceiling but don't make it too high.
Players want the luxury tax, owners don't = see above, that can all be worked in.
Both sides understand the need to change the free agency and arbitration ideas, that is fine.
After all is said and done, can there be a peace here? If so, then who will benefit?
The players will lose money, for sure, but 3rd liners don't deserve that much cash in the first place. Plus with players lasting 20 years unlike other sports, something has to be done. The owners want such a low cap that would see them laughing all the way to the bank, this of course has to change.
One last thing, will the fans see a change in the ticket prices? I would hope so. Winnipeg fans have read that Chipman wants a 30 million dollar cap for a team to come to Winnipeg. He says that because he knows that would never happen. I could suspect a 35 soft with a 50 mil hard cap, then of course Chipman would have his avenue not to bring in a NHL team.
After all is said and done, Winnipeg will not have a team unless Chipman is forced out or bought out by someone seriously wanting to bring back NHL to the Peg. When talking about the CBA, neither side will agree to anything since they both want things neither side will concent to. the NHL needs a CAP, that is certain, but where does the cap start? A soft cap means nothing because the high paying owners will break that with no thoughts and the players will also have no respect for it because their mindset will say, "If the owners want me that bad, they'll do whatever it takes". Therefor a Soft cap will do nothing.
So no NHL in sight for at least the rest of 2005 and probably 2006 unless there are replacement players which then seems like we would be watching Moose caliber players. Ewww. That's not an NHL I would want to see.
