Exactly Vivian. It is very humourous, because for most of the parties involved in the lockout, Winnipeg isn't even on their event horizon yet...LOL...
There more concerned on posturing, how the Media is perceiving this, and whom will cave first. The most intelligent people in Hockey circles are more concerned with how this prolonged lockout will REALLY effect the fan base, corporate partners, and the teams that are in weak hockey markets as it is, that will have a difficult time being off the map for a year then trying to get back ON THE MAP. But even in these "Hockey Smart" groups, there is two prevailing opinions.
The 2nd opinion, or alternative opinion, is that it is also possible, that after not seeing hockey for a year or so, many in the U.S will come out to see games with a renewed sense of curiousity and interest.
Despite this possibility, I'll bank on at least one team considering Winnipeg to relocate their Hockey Club, or sell to a group here because although Gary Bettman speaks for the 30 owners by saying they are ready to sit this out as long as it takes to guarantee Cost Certainty, there are alot of small market, or southern based teams that are actually guaranteed to lose no less than $8 million dollars this year.
That, is a very conservative figure, since I am quite sure some teams will lose alot more than this amount by not playing this year.

Fan2 here, sometimes I'm just too lazy to log in, but all messages by fan2 are actually by me.
The league keeps saying that they want a partnership with the players, which is the course that they need to take, but I think they should have an internal meeting with the owners to discuss Revenue Sharing. Revenue Sharing in the big picture, doesn't affect the players as much as it does the owners, so I think that is where this whole thing begins. The NHLPA says it won't talk about a cap because they don't trust the NHL's figures etc etc, but if the NHL can show the PA that the owners are partners with each other, it might convince the players that they can trust the numbers.
I personally think that if a team is over a certain threshold in revenue, that it will qualify for revenue sharing, where the total revenue of those teams is put into a pool, whereby the highest revenue team would get the highest set percentage of that, followed by the next highest, etc etc until you get to the lowest team that is above the threshold. This will eliminate the large amount of disparity between the high profit teams and the low profit teams. While it still promotes teams to maximize revenues so they can get the highest percentage, and penalizes teams that don't attempt to generate revenue, it will help maintain a certain parity in the league. As well, I think that all playoff revenue should go directly to that team as a bonus for teams that perform well.
Revenue sharing is where the rich owners are going to have to make consessions, much like the rich players have to make the largest consessions for the players.

A cap and revenue sharing is the only way that Edmonton. Calgary.Ottawa and Winnipeg will be able to survive in the New NHL. It would allow us to become the Green Bay's of the NHL. Green Bay has been able to keep Brett Favre since 1992 and the Packers won the superbowl with this quarterback. They've had competitive teams for many years since. The Jets would be on a level playing field with the rest of the league and thus would be in a better position to excel in this market. A luxury tax system doesn't work (goodbye Mr. Delgado, Toronto can't afford you anymore), is a prime example. Mr Goodenow claims his new system would work and also claims that his old system was working. In the last 10 years salaries have risen 300%, and most Canadian teams have become feeder systems for the free spending markets like Toronto, Philly ect... His philosophy is to creat a 2 tier market of have's and have not's. For Winnipeg's sake I hope they don't play hockey this year so that a complete restructuring can take place some time in the fall or spring of 2005/2006. The NHL will be a better league with Winnipeg.
Sorry, I needed to get that off my chest... I feel better now..
