NHL to reject NHLPA proposal TSN.ca Staff 12/13/2004 The outlook for this National Hockey League season has never been more bleak than it is today. TSN has obtained a copy of a confidential eight-page memorandum sent by the NHL to all 30 member clubs, outlining the league's reaction to the NHL Players' Association proposal of last week and clearly stating the NHL's intention to reject the proposal and counter with one of its own. "In sum, we believe the Union's December 9 CBA proposal, while offering necessary and significant short-term financial relief, falls well short of providing the fundamental systemic changes that are required to ensure that overall League economics remain in synch on a going-forward basis," NHL executive vice president Bill Daly wrote in the Dec. 12 memo which went to all governors and alternative governors, including many NHL general managers. "While the immediate 'rollback' of 24 per cent offered by the Union would materially improve League economics for the 2004-05 season, there is virtually nothing in the Union's proposal that would prevent the dollars 'saved' from being re-directed right back into the player compensation system, such that the League's overall financial losses would approach current levels in only a matter of a couple of years." I admit that I'm pretty suprised. I was always hoping that the NHL would play hardball, but I have a feeling that it will be the NHLPA to cave. Sure, most players will make 100,000-250,000 this year, and that would be a great salary for you and I to live on.
However, we are talking about NHL players here. How are they going to pay for all the luxury items that accompanies plaing in the NHL? Their million dollar mansions, their Corvettes, their racing boats, etc. Let's be realistic. Most NHLers have budgeted according to the salary they make (avg. $1.8 million). Thats a far cry from relative pennies they will make this season.
The bills will start to add up VERY SOON, and the players will realize that it's not a RIGHT to be making the money they make. It's a PRIVILIDGE. I'd love to be the repo man knocking on Mike Modano's door to take away one of his Jaguars!! ;D

Yes!!!
No NHL hockey this season.
The only bad thing about having no hockey this season is that the next time we see the Stanley Cup it'll have a sunburn from spending all that time in Florida.
But, it also means the next time the puck is dropped in the NHL,
We're Back!!!

I hope we're back the next time a puck is dropped on NHL Ice.
As Mario Lemieux said, he will move the team if a new arena is not built for his team. I think he would have to swallow pride but Winnipeg could be a great location for a new team. The only problem is the Penguins are terrible. But then again, that could change with Revenue sharing and lower salaries and caps and such.
I hope the NHL doesn't start up until a CBA is worked out that allows a team in Winnipeg.

Yes, the Penguins are a young, inexperienced team with no super stars, except a promising 19 year old goalie in Fleury. But what a starting point! Think about it...
Post-CBA with a salary cap Alot of upper level teams will have to release, or cut players to reach the cap. The market would be saturated with talent, and a team such as Pittsburgh could easily pick up 2-3 strong defensemen, and a few scoring forwards to complement a young, up and coming team. Imagine if we had the Penguins, and we drafted Crosby?
Possibilities become endless folks....

I don't see a team in Wpg the next time a puck is dropped. I think what this impasse ultimatley will do is change the economics of the game which will give us an "opportunity" to see if were ready to step back into the game. Dont forget, the existance of another NHL hockey club in this city wont be soley rested on the shoulders of the posters on this board. It will encompass the support of the entire province. Are we (they) ready to take this on? Or are they scared of getting burnt?

Winnipeg Picking up Crosby. Now that sounds like something to think about. Just think. We could have the next Gretzky. Or will the new Jets say he's not good enough like they did 25 years ago?
I'm thinking with some brains in the office the new Jets could go far.
Can anyone just imagine the buzz in the city when they annouce a team coming back? Polls on what the Jersey's should look like and name and everything. WOW. Those times will be great.
I say we have 3 jerseys. One with the new logo, one with the old one and something totally different. Could you all just imagine if they come out onto the ice wearing the 80's Jersey's? I swear the fans wouldn't stop screaming for the entire game.
I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it.
