"With the dollar consistently over 80 cents this year, and the significant concessions we have already offered in our proposals, they would have been far more profitable." "I believe more than ever that without our Canadian franchises there is no National Hockey League," Bettman said. "This is where hockey works. This is where hockey is important.

Where was this Bettman in 1996? In 1996, Bettman was still convinced he could make the NHL as popular as the NBA, NFL, and MLB in the US. He was still convinced that teams in the Sun-Belt (Tampa, Miami, Anaheim, Nashville, Carolina, etc.) would flock in droves to NHL games once they were introduced to the game. He failed Bettman is finally seeing the light, and realizing what most Canadians knew from day one. Hockey is a regional sport in America, and it will always be that way. Hockey has a big following only in the North-East US, the Great Lakes region and Minnesota, and to a lesser extent, Colorado. Hockey has been, and forever will be a novelty in most of the US. It will always be the #1 sport in Canada. I'm sure if Bettman could go back in time, he would have done everything in his power to save teams in Winnipeg, Minnesota, Quebec, and hartford. All were true hockey markets.

It is truly hard to say if he is being sincere or not... he might just be saying what we all want to hear. He might be "pulling a Chipman", nobody really knows what his stance is.
I think that he does want to keep all the markets he has in Canada where they are... but if he wants another team in Winnipeg is another question. I HOPE SO.

I am sure they will keep Bettman until the cba is reached, to show soladarity. But if they don't get what they want Bettman will be given the door. But I also I think when this is all said and done they will replace him. Well I hope so, but it better be someone who knows hockey.

"I believe more than ever that without our Canadian franchises there is no National Hockey League," Bettman said. "This is where hockey works. This is where hockey is important. Just how important is it Mr.Bettman? And here I thought the future of the NHL was in the Southern USA. He's only now realizing this? Put your money where your mouth is and make it work then....clean up some of the atrocity that you've created.

Exactly, hockey is way too much of a regional sport.
