Reading that story, if you bought the team you would be in limbo until you find out whether you get the arena from the slots license.
No slots license-value of team declines, forced to relocate.
Slots license-value of team increase greatly, have to tough it out for a few years at least in Mellon Arena.
I am also wondering, if the slots license is granted, do they begin building the new arena right away, or does the casino go up first?

So where is the WInnipeg group? We don't have any excuses for non action now. I read a longer story about this on TSN. If a Winnipeg group makes an offer and the team (whatever actual company it is) wins the slot license then they are legally bound to stay in Pittsburgh, it wouldn't make sense for them to be involved. A Winnipeg group could certainly get involved if the slots agreement isn't won by the Penguins and then move the team. I also think at this point the Penguins value would be much lower.

I am willing to guarantee that the slots application is a smokescreen made by politicians to keep the Penguins in town after November's elections. Our politicians pulled similar crap with the Jets, (Filmon, Thompson, etc.) They have had over a decade to get this done and have stonewalled Mario at every turn. What makes anyone believe that they are going to lift a finger for him now?

You could be right, because when you think about it, why would Mario want to sell now if he believed the slots license was going to happen.

Exactly. I'm sure he'd love to see the gaming thing happen and for the Penguins to stay but I'm sure he knows that is a total shot in the dark at best.

Wow, I actually agree with you guys on this. It's been a while since that's happened...
I don't think Mario would be selling if he was confident that the slots licence were going to be signed. It would(should) be so easy to sell out and make money in a new arena, and he must not think that it is going to happen.

I'm just going to throw this out there......
Would any of you feel any guilt at all if, say, the Penguins were to up and leave Pitt for Wpg?
Before lashing out, hear my reasoning. Pittsburgh might not be a traditional hockey market a la the Original 6 or basically any city in Canada, however they do have some history.......despite low attendence figures there are generations of kids, I am sure, who grew up loving their Penguins. Maybe not to the depth we loved our Jets, but there must be some sentiment there.
I point this out, as opposed to the new Southern/Sunbelt franchises, where even (the few) diehard fans have grown to love it, as opposed to growing up loving it.
don't interpret this as anything more than a little compassion....obviously that would take a back seat to my desire to see the NHL come back home to our town.
thoughts?

I would feel bad for the fans but still maintain that the politicians have nobody to blame but themselves. The same is true about the Charlotte Hornets leaving for New Orleans and the Browns leaving Cleveland. The difference is that Mario has been getting jacked around but the politicians in the city and state for 8 years now and he has given them every chance in the world to make things easier for the Penguins to survive.
Once again the fans get screwed because of egotistical politicians, we as Winnipeggers should be collective experts on the subject at this point.

So what do everyone think the Penguins are worth? 50 million? 100 million? more? If the slots license doesn't get granted we better be prepared to pony up here...

Mike Ozanian, a senior editor who specializes in sports franchises at Forbes Magazine, said the value of all NHL franchises has increased since before the lockout due to the salary cap. He estimates the Penguins are worth $100 million, but would be worth up to 30 per cent more with a new arena.

Then again, this isn't MLB or the NFL so there is no guarantee at all the an NHL will get full market value. No matter what kind of cost certainty the CFL has had, seldom has a team fetched full price or full market value. More often than not people have picked teams up for a song via the recievership pile.
Each new sale dictates what the market is willing to pay and this first sale in the New NHL is going to determine exactly what teams are going to be worth.

The NHL owns the rights to the name and I can't see them keeping it from us because an active Winnipeg Jets are worth more to the league than a defunt Winnipeg Jets. More t-shirt sales, more jersey sales, (especially if Sidney Crosby's name is attached to the Jets.)

I bet that all the Canadian teams combined make more money then every team in the US. The only thing that makes the states look good for hockey is New York and Detroit.
