I realize we have had a lot of discussion pertaining to attendance figures and that they can't be trusted due to giveaways etc. I recall some here stating that the southern teams seem to hang on due to the revenue they receive outside of the normal gate receipts. They may draw less than Edmonton, Calgary etc but receive more income from other sources.
This would presumably be items such as : 1. Concession sales 2. Advertising Revenue 3. TV deals
Something just doesn't add up here and perhaps someone can clarify where all this "other revenue" is coming from.
Concession sales? The buildings are half empty. Advertising Revenue? Why advertise in a place that is half full? TV deals. Ratings are very low for hockey viewership in most part of the US, especially down south.
Where are these southern teams getting all this money?

do their arena leases mean they have less expenses?and how about less tax money they have to pay? i remember reading once that the montreal canadiens at one time paid more in taxes than almost all US teams combined.

That is an interesting point. I forgot about taxes but I can't imagine that can account for all of the differences. There must be something else going on here.
Need to hear from others.

Luxury suites are huge, too. I know Atlanta pulls in a lot of money from theirs.
TV deals are big in the northern cities - especially those in the New York area (Isles, Devils). Boston's is huge, too.
Nashville not only pays no rent, they get revenue from other events (concerts, etc) in their building. I don't know if other teams have this advantage, but it applies in that specific case.
Bringing in money is US dollars gives them about a 13% advantage in exchange rates right off the bat, too.....

Using Florida as an example, it is not inconceivable to think that what they bring in for advertising/promotional support is a lot more than an Edmonton or a Calgary because of the fact that the Miami Dolphins and Miami Heat may be pushing up the costs of advertising in that city.
The same ad or sign in Miami may be twice the price compared to Edmonton.
If you are a business that can't justify the costs to be associated with the Dolphins......you go to what you can justify......and that may be the Panthers.

4. Public subsidies in the form of tax abatements or low/free arena leases. Think for a moment of the number of teachers, police and firefighters who have to be/have been laid off to compensate.
