I got a huge kick out of some comments on the 'Canes message board re their teams terrible attendance...while everyone is making a million excuses (Church on Wednesday night!!) one level headed fan sorts them out with a dose of reality... ;D

Last night, with no other local sports to contend with....with the 'Canes back in town after a long time away....with a heavily promoted 2-for-1 deal....with a FIRST PLACE TEAM....the 'Canes drew 11,000.
I absolutely love this team, its players and coaches, but unfortunately the way things are are the way things are. This market simply will not support an NHL team, and if the 'Canes end up moving to Seattle or Winnipeg or somewhere else in the next 2-3 years, nobody can blame Karmanos whatsoever.
The facts are the facts, period."

this type of reply by JO-JO is indicative of the inability of folks to view reality: "Considering the sports enviornment around the triangle everyone knew it would be a tough sell, do we need to sell out every game? I don't think so, we just need to become profitable sooner or later. I for one would hate the day that they move. Winning will help the cause a lot! "
The 'Canes have been in Raleigh how long? Seven years? We went to the STANLEY CUP FINALS only, what, three years ago? We've been in first place ALL YEAR? We have one of the brightest young stars IN THE NHL? We play an exciting brand of hockey and ALWAYS COME BACK? Our coach is the USA OLYMPIC COACH? And yet we still have 11k for a home game with ABSOLUTELY NO COMPETING DRAWS IN THE TRIANGLE?!?!?!?
Look, I absolutely love the 'Canes, but there is NO WAY that is gonna past muster with the owners, players or team. I have no doubt the team came out in the first, looked up into the stands and said crap, what's it gonna take to put folks in the stands? How do you think the Panthers would play football with a half-empty stadium? Hard? Or would they phone it in?
Admit it; we are the Arizona Cardinals of the NHL. Very, very sad... "
"dude, we had 11,000 people for a FIRST PLACE TEAM!!! You're comparing apples and oranges. It'd be like the RCA Dome being half-full for the undefeated Indianapolis Colts. It'd be like having a half-full Dean Dome for UNC vs. Duke. Get it? There is NO WAY we should only have 11k for a game here with such a great team on the ice. The only answer is that the area simply cannot support an NHL team, period. Sad news, I know, but reality. Any suggestions as to solutions, as opposed to continually twisting the facts to make it seem not so bad?"
Someone said that if you go to another county in NC and ask about the Hurricanes, people might say Miami. I would submit that if you go to some places in Raleigh and Durham and ask about Rob Brind-Amour and Eric Staal people would say WHO?
