Even though I don't think it would be a good NHL market, I'm growing increasingly worried about K.C's chances. Think about it. They are constructing a $200 million NHL and NBA-ready arena. I don't think you'd do that unless you were promised a team in one of those leagues. And from what I understand, the NBA isn't looking to expand. Any NBA fans out there? Could any teams in poor markets relocate in the very near future? How many NBA teams are for sale? I'm not a basketball fan so I wouldn't know. Of course, the NBA would be a much better fit than the NHL in Kansas City. Heck, I even read that there's some kind of "basketball hall of fame" planned for the new Sprint Center. But it IS a darn fine lookin' NHL rink. And they have expressed interest in acquiring a team. They're certainly more public about it than Winnipeg...

I hate to say it but I think K.C. will be getting a team before Winnipeg Let's go someone, anyone - start rattling the cage! Make some noise about Winnipeg's interest! If only a guy like Asper would make an announcement that they are in hot pursuit. The silence is killing me. You know I have been thinking alot lately that maybe there is nothing going on behind the scenes. Maybe we are all just wasting our time coming to this site everyday watching, hoping waiting for something to happen and it never will!! I hate theses negative thoughts but you gotta admit that something should have leaked to the public by now about a group trying to land a team in Winnipeg. I will hang tight until the off season but if nothing has been made public before the start of next NHL season that a Winnipeg group has formed, has the $$, and will be in the mix for any team that is thinking of bailing out of their current market then I will give up hope. I am not saying any of you should do the same, I am just expressing my own feelings on this.

When Bettman listed the 7 teams who have "expressed interest" in the Penguins, Winnipeg was one city that was mentioned.
Which means our "interest" is SERIOUS.
He wouldn't have said that due to just a couple people writing/calling him saying "Winnipeg wants a team."

I hope you are right B.T., I really do. Even though I don't have many posts, I have been following the campaign since 03'. It is just starting to wear on me, all this waiting.

i'm not concerned one bit about KC acquiring a team.
first, the arena in kc is owned by the owner of the kings. neither him, nor his company can own another team.
any owner in kc will have a lease arrangement like the jets and wec. the arena will suck all the revenues and the team won't be able to survive.
if there will be any major sports franchise enter KC, it'll be the NBA. no nhl team will survive on gate receipts alone in KC, and that's all they'd get.
not too mention factors such as the non-support for the royals (2nd worst attendance in MLB with cheapest seats) and poor support for pro hockey in the past (scouts, blades, etc.)

The resident Kansas Citian chimes in again....
The municipality of Kansas City has a population of 444,387, but the metropolitan area has a population of 1,908,354.
And for an update on the Sprint Center: It looks as if cost overruns are going to bump the price tag up $30M ($280M). Anschutz was supposed to handle any overruns, but now he's saying he won't put anymore money into it. There is increasing doubt that the (indefinite) hotel/rental car tax will be able to generate enough revenue, so now people are speculating that taxpayers might be asked to help buttress the load.
(Gah! What happens when you delay your post for nearly an hour...)

We have to be patient in Winnipeg because there are 2-3 idiots left in the US who are willing to overpay for a NHL team. The NHL will do everything to satisfy them, to avoid any negative impact on US franchise values. THEN, it will be preferred that a team be sold to a Canadian group rather than let it fold outright (which has severe negative effects on overall franchise value within the US). The world is flat but not when the NHL and other US-centered sports leagues are concerned.
