I think Houston would support the NHL just fine to be honest. You can't really judge them on minor league support since they had the big time taken from them just like us. When you are big league in every other sport, you aren't going to avoid the NFL, NBA and MLB for a minor league hockey team. If Winnipeg had the NFL they would be on page one to page 100 with the AHL being a very distant second at best.
While I don't think Houston should be first in line, they are far more deserving than Carolina, Miami, Anahiem, Tampa or Nashville and they have teams right now.

THIS IS SHAMEFUL. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THESE PEOPLE. TALK ABOUT MAKING WINNIPEG/CANADIANS/JETS FANS LOOK BAD!! Name Comments 144. Winnipeg Winnipeg deserves a team more than the pathetic city of Houston which draws about 3000 people a night for AHL. HOUSTON SUCKS GO WINNIPEG !!! 143. John Smith How many NHL fans in Houston..? 12...? 30 maybe? The only ICE you guys see is in your DRINKS. 142. Craig Ratz Size of the city means nothing...amount of hockey fans is crucial! Winnipeg has enough fans and deserves a team...in my opinion before Houston does! 141. Brad Stevenson 140. Brad Stevenson 139. Doug How many outdoor hockey rinks in Houston? ZERO? Oh yeah, give them a team! (rolls eyes) 138. Houston is Fat Houston will never get I REPEAT will NEVER get a team before Winnipeg. Winnipeg got a team before Houston and they'll get a team before Houston simple as that. Big deal if you have a larger population, its all about PER CAPITA population. Plus shouldn't you guys be like riding horses instead of watching Hockey? Bottom line Winnipeg ) Houston, the Jets will be back 137. Brian Modzelewski 136. Master Boyd If Houston LOVES hockey, why does its top hockey team only get 3,000 "fans" a game? Dear NHL: Please don't come to Houston! 135. Joe Blow Who CARES if the Toyota Center seats 18,000? There will only be 8,000 there for most Houston NHL games. Bring the NHL to WINNIPEG! www.jetsowner.com

With the huge population of Houston, hockey probably will work there. Who cares if it doesn't snow? Dallas was the same 13 years ago and it has certainly supported the Stars.
Here's some facts: Winnipeg metro population: 702,400 Houston metro population: 5,180,443
If the claim that "Winnipeg has three times as many hockey fans as Houston does were true", that would mean that if EVERY resident of the Winnipeg metro area was a hockey fan, that would mean there are less than 250,000 hockey fans in Houston. Somehow, I have a hard time believing that less than 5% of the population of Houston cares about hockey.

If Houston deserves a team because "they have lots of people!" then I guess Tokyo and Mexico City deserve NHL teams too!
NEWS FLASH: New York has 8 million people. 10,000 empty seats for some NY Islander games.
But.. b-but...They have soooo many people, how could this be?!?
Ugh.. I am so so so sick of people thinking Houston should get a team because it's a big city. That's not a good reason.

I Believe it. I wouldent be surorised if 1% of there population even knew the rules of hockey never mind go to a hockey game. There way to big on there college sports there, this would be a bad bad market to put a team.

And Carolina, Nashville, Anahiem, Miami and Tampa are any better?
Like I've said before, Houston doesn't deserve to be first in line but they certainly deserve a team more than the cities I mentioned above that HAVE teams.

Actually I would suspect Houstons hockey fanbase (hardcore and lukewarm fans) is probably in the range of 1-2%. As after all.... if there really was 5% of the population that liked hockey (1 in 20) then shouldnt we see much better TV ratings? (5% of the USA would be 15M). I realize that we are just talking about Houston, but if 1 in 20 people were hockey fans in more markets in the USA they would be doing pretty good.

If Houston deserves a team because "they have lots of people!" then I guess Tokyo and Mexico City deserve NHL teams too! Tokyo would sellout every NHL game, if given a team. Japanese are crazy about anything North American, and it explains why every NFL/MLB exhibition game sells out the Tokyo Dome. On a sidenote, the most popular ticket in town for the 1998 Olympics was....you guessed it...Ice Hockey! Japenese businessmen would pay thousands for tickets to the big games... I hate to correct you, but the Islanders don't play out of New York City. Their home is in Nassau County, NY. No, it is not. However, Houston has a long and storied history of support for Ice Hockey at many levels. I would not be terribly upset if Houston received an NHL team...
