I wasn't sure if anyone noticed tonight online as I am doing a project, but while I await an update on today's labor meeting in Toronto... Rogers Sportsnet reports that there might be an offer to acquire the Pittsburgh Penguins by a combined investment group from San Jose, California and Portland, Oregon. According to the news story, if the Penguins are sold, Mario Lemieux would remain with the franchise in some capacity and if it's re-located, he'd go with the team. Rogers Sportsnet's hockey page (June 2): www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/article.jsp?content=20050602_183608_6180"Purchase offer for Penguins" Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Penguins page (June 3): www.post-gazette.com/pg/05154/515181.stm"West Coast buyers line up" NOTE: Please see my post on page 2 for the latest update from June 10th.

Many cities have been speculated as potential sites, including Las Vegas, Portland, Kansas City, and Sacramento.

GoMoose, I did mention Sacramento before as a possible NHL city in the future.
Guys... do not jump all over this. This is of no surprise regarding the Penguins. Basically, as said a number of times, only if they don't get their new arena would the chances increase dramatically the team would move.
Also, don't get crazy over the fact Winnipeg was not mentioned. This is for obvious reasons as discussed in the past by Darren and most of us here.
First thing's first... let's hope for the new CBA to be good for all franchises regardless if they stay in their current cities or new locations.

Also Hatrick, the city of Sacramento is still trying to get plans done on a new downtown arena for at least the NBA's Kings. From what I understand, pretty far from finalized though.
Oh, I added to the opening post an article from today's Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Nothing from the city's other major newspaper.

Winnipeg would never get the Penguins. It's a place Mario doesn't want to think about.
Winnipeg has a chance of Landing the Florida Panthers though.

Based on what my sources say, Pittsburgh will relocate to Houston or Kansas City.

Based on what my sources say, Pittsburgh will relocate to Houston or Kansas City. It would be a sad day if Pittsburgh ever moves. The fans have really supported the Pens over the years, but right now they have what is really a glorified AHL team. It's a darn shame.

I agree, but if they go to kansas city.... they deserve to fold.

The Pens being in bankruptcy court a few years ago meant that they got a late start on the "We need a Taxpayer funded stadium NOW!" talk. The state of Pennsylvania (and Pittsburgh in general) has spent alot of public money over the last few years on brand new stadiums and I think the Penguins missed the Taxpayer Funded Express train. I wouldnt be upset if the Pens moved to Winnipeg, Quebec City or Hartford but I will be pis$ed if they go to Kansas City, Houston or wherever....
