"The Mighty Ducks have become a wonderful asset to this community, with a terrific following, a history of winning and a strong nucleus of outstanding young prospects and talented veterans,"
Hah. History of winning? Did I miss something?

Dang it, ya guys beat me to it! Yeah, history of winning is the only thing I disagree with there. The other parts of the statement such as an asset to Orange County in southern California and the city of Anaheim, I can agree with though. Well, the NHL won't have to take over operations of the Mighty Ducks, do they? I was surprised by this announcement that a sale was finalized. Dr. Henry Samueli and his wife Susan have reached an agreement with Disney to purchase the Mighty Ducks. So here's the Mighty Ducks press release now online... Anaheim Mighty Ducks official press release (February 25): www.mightyducks.com/pressbox/pressbody.asp?id=958Samueli's Buy Mighty Ducks 2/25/2005 Friday ANAHEIM, Ca -- Dr. Henry Samueli and his wife, Susan, well-known Orange County entrepreneurs and philanthropists, announced today that they have reached an agreement with The Walt Disney Company to purchase the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, the National Hockey League Club based in Orange County, California. Purchase price and terms were not disclosed. The sale of the team requires approval by the National Hockey League Board of Governors. "We are absolutely delighted that we were able to reach this important agreement with The Walt Disney Company," said Dr. Samueli. "Since The Walt Disney Company created the team in 1992, the Mighty Ducks have become a wonderful asset to this community, with a terrific following, a history of winning and a strong nucleus of outstanding young prospects and talented veterans. Our acquisition of the team assures that the Mighty Ducks will remain in the hands of local ownership committed to keeping the team in Orange County and putting a consistent winner on the ice," Samueli said. "Our primary goal in creating the Mighty Ducks was to make another major professional sports franchise a large part of the spirit and fabric of the city of Anaheim and Orange County," said Michael D. Eisner, CEO of The Walt Disney Company. "We are all proud of the team's accomplishments, including its Western Conference Championship and its berth in the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2002-03 season. We are also pleased with the Ducks' steadfast commitment to the community over the years. We are confident that Henry and Susan Samueli will bring continued success to the Ducks and we will remain among the biggest fans of the team going forward," added Eisner. Dr. Samueli is co-founder, Chairman of the Board and Chief Technical Officer of Irvine-based Broadcom Corporation, a global leader in broadband communications semiconductor chips. Samueli said he will continue to remain focused on his duties at Broadcom and leave the day-to-day management of the franchise to a strong leadership team. "I believe in doing things right, and we fully intend to bring together the top talent and resources, both on and off the ice, to ensure that the Mighty Ducks team remains among the best managed, admired and most successful professional hockey franchises in North America," Samueli said. "Since Susan and I also own the management company that operates the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, the Mighty Ducks’ home ice, acquiring the team was a natural next step, one that we are convinced will benefit both entities, especially the fans in Orange County," added Samueli. "We are absolutely thrilled to be able to grow the team in Anaheim and contribute to its future success," Susan Samueli said.

i aways get a laugh when reporters put in the "subject to approval by the NHL board of governors ... yada yada yada !!!"
this is the same group, led by the same commissioner, that approved spanos buying the islanders ! due diligence is a term that these turkeys don't give a damn about. sometime's i wake up and wonder how these guys ever made enough money to be NHL owners, but then i remember most are criminals or scoundrels.

Keep in mind that a handful of teams have changed owners since that embarassing approval of John Spano purchasing the Islanders with counterfeit money. Same commissioner, yes. Same group of owners, not entirely.
Guess what? That fraud Spano seems to be in more trouble now. Go figure.

Reportedly for 50-60 Million U.S. That's it? Wow. I recall teams in the Southern US were once valued at $90 million each!

anaheim will have alot of trouble surviving the lockout fallout.
this franchise, despite the ownership change and the hiring of brian burke, remains a potential relocation candidate in a few seasons.

Anaheim I think will do fine I think... The reason they lost money last season is due to a 50M payroll! What kind of crazy man would spend 50M on a Sunbelt team

No, it was supposedly for $75 million. Remember something guys, franchise values are going to go up after the new CBA is in place and teams that are operating under the new economic system.

What a sad day for hockey....
Maybe the Ducks will move up from the last paragraph on page 78 in the Orange County Journal, to page 76. A remarkable acheivement!

To this day I've never gotten over the team's name.

Why? Because Winnipeg doesn't have an NHL team and Anaheim does?
C'mon, move forward and stop dwelling on what cannot be changed. This campaign is about looking forward to the bright future ahead in the NHL. It is expected to include the new Winnipeg Jets.
As for the Mighty Ducks name, I don't have a problem with it. It's not the best and there is a possibility it could be changed. Or it might not happen.

I don't have a problem with the name, the movies (as corny as they were) gave hockey a lot of exposure and the merchandise was pretty popular when it came out

"The Mighty Ducks have become a wonderful asset to this community, with a terrific following, a history of winning and a strong nucleus of outstanding young prospects and talented veterans," Hah. History of winning? Did I miss something? Even though I'm a Jets fan, you do have to admit, they've only been in the playoffs 2 times, and have had a better playoff record than the jets.
