So, here's something I've been thinking about... what will the divisions look like in the new NHL (with the Jets back)? Here's what they are now: WEST: Pacific: Dallas, SJ, JA, Anaheim, Phoenix Northwest: Van, Edmonton, Calgary, Colorado, Minnesota Central: Detroit, St Louis, Chicago, Nashville, Columbus EAST: Northeast: Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Buffalo, Boston Atlantic: NYR, NYI, Philly, Pitts, New Jersey Southeast: Washington, T Bay, Florida, Carolina, Atlanta Let's say (hypothetically ;D) that Pittsburgh moves to Winnipeg. I say, move Detroit to the Northeast, and move Boston to the Atlantic to replace Pittsburgh. As for the Jets, move Minnesota to the Central and have the Jets take their place in the Northwest. Fire up the old rivalries with the Oilers, Flames and Canucks! What if Nashville moves? Or Carolina? Or Jersey (BRODEUR as a JET!!! ) Just a "food for thought" type of thread....

I like the idea of moving Boston to the Atlantic division.
On the topic of divisions, the division names are lame. Bring back the Campbell conference, Smythe division, Patrick division etc... more interesting than east, central, north-west, etc... IMO

Ok, New Jersey will always have a team. Don't even think that the Devils will come to Winnipeg.
I'm hoping for Nashville, Florida, Carolina, and Pittsburgh. I'm also hoping we get back Pheonix. I know the team isn't that great but improving, but wouldn't it be great to stick it to them and take our team back? Because they have all our stuff.
Oh yeah, we should draft Crosby too. He would have been so much fun to watch this year too. Oh well, we'll have to wait till next year for him to put on Jets colors.

Ok, New Jersey will always have a team. Don't even think that the Devils will come to Winnipeg. I'm still not so sure about Jersey. I've heard that they're getting a new rink, which would keep them there for sure. Nevertheless, their fan support has been terrible. Most people in NJ are Rangers fans (believe it or not). When they won their last cup in 2003, they weren't even selling out in the Conference finals. Anyway, a man can dream, can't he? ....

they had a hard time selling out game 7 of the stanley cup finals!!! any city that cant sell out ANY playoff game does not deserve to have a team.

Here would be possible solutions to the Division Dispute:
****NHL Divisions (if Pittsburgh relocated to Winnipeg)****
EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic - Boston, Montreal, New Jersey, New York, New York Northeast - Buffalo, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Toronto, Washington Southeast - Atlanta, Carolina, Florida, Nashville, Tampa Bay
WESTERN CONFERENCE Central - Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Minnesota, Winnipeg Midwest - Calgary, Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton, St Louis Pacific - Anahiem, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver
****NHL Divisions (if Nashville Relocated to Winnipeg)****
EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic - Boston, Montreal, New Jersey, New York, New York Northeast - Buffalo, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Toronto Southeast - Atlanta, Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington
WESTERN CONFERENCE Central - Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Minnesota, Winnipeg Midwest - Calgary, Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton, St Louis Pacific - Anahiem, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver
****NHL Divisions (if Carolina Relocated to Winnipeg)****
EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic - Boston, Montreal, New Jersey, New York, New York Northeast - Buffalo, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Toronto Southeast - Atlanta, Florida, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Washington

I would rather see more Canadian Representation in as many divisions as possible.

Winnipeg WILL NOT ever be in the "Central Division"...
We'll be in the northwest division with Cal, Edm., and Van.... to cut down on travel costs.

I agree, especially since most teams do the "Cal, Edm, Van" on a road trip together, and now teams would be able to do "Wpg, Minni" on a road trip together, or even hitting up the entire division on one big road trip.

actually I believe the Jets always wanted to be in the central "Norris" division because the flight cost in that division were quicker and cheaper. I agree with Chris on this one, the more canadien representation the better chances in having a canadian team in the playoffs.

I would rather see more Canadian Representation in as many divisions as possible. Ahhhh... this is an approach I never thought of! So, is it better to: a) be in a division with your traditional rivals like Van, Edm, Cal to make the regular season more exciting b) be in a division with the teams closest to you to save travel costs and spread the Canadian teams around to maximize the number in the playoffs. Not an easy question - my original proposal has Van, Edm, Cal, the Jets and Colorado in one division, but I later realized Colorado would probably object - they'd have 4 Canadian teams in their division, which would not be a great draw for them at home. Ducky is right - in 1982 (when the Rockies moved to New Jersey) Shenkarow had to be convinced to move the Jets to the Smythe because the travel costs were so much higher. They wanted to stay in the old Norris with Chi, StL, Tor and Minny as opposed to flying way out to Van and LA. Anyway, more food for thought!

One thing to consider in the re-allignment is television revenues. The Wild, currently in the Northwest, have a horrible time drawing a television audience for away games because of the time difference. A game that starts at 7:30 in Vancouver is at 9:30 in Minnesota and, on a weeknight, will draw a scant audience at best. Putting Winnipeg in the Central with Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, etc, though upsetting to Canadians who want some national rivalries reformed, will not generate the television revenues owners would want to see.
Another thing to consider is the travel cost. Vancouver and Winnipeg are distant, and no matter how it is sliced up, Winnipeg will always have to travel a fair distance. However a MN, Chicago, Detroit trip is geographically shorter than a Cal, Edmonton, Vancouver trip.
Just some points to consider.

Excuse me: I meant to say that putting Winnipeg with MN, Chicago, and Detroit would generate television revenues that grouping them with west coast teams would not.
(This is a consideration of revenues for all teams, not just winnipeg fans who would sacrifice sleep)

It all varies on the team that would relocate but I would like do something along the lines of this:
Eastern conference Atlantic -> Phili, NJD, NYI, NYR,WAS. NorthEast -> Bos, Tor, Ott, Mon, Buff. SouthEast ->TB, Flo, Car, Atl, DAL.
Western Conference Central -> Det, Chi, St.L, Clb, Nas. Northwest - >Van, Cal, Edm, Min, WPG. Pacific ->SJ, LA, Ana, Phx, COL.
Thats using Pittsburgh as my example of a team to relocate. I know Dallas isn't really in the east, but they sure as heck aren't in the pacific either. Colorado would be happier in the Pac seein as how they're right there anyways, and Washington would be closer to everyone in their division as well. Mind ya there'd likely be a couple of other teams relocating as well if it does happen. And giving somone like Seattle or Portland a team would mess my whole structure up. But if it was just the Pens to Winnipeg it looks pretty good.
