I've heard on the CBC a few times about the St Louis Blues almost relocating to Saskatoon back in the mid 1980's. What's the deal with that?

I've heard on the CBC a few times about the St Louis Blues almost relocating to Saskatoon back in the mid 1980's. What's the deal with that? We signed a deal and even got Don Cherry to wear a Saskatchewan Blues hat on TV. Then the NHL rejected us as owners. The Blues sued them and never sent anybody to represent the club at the entry draft that year. The NHL found a buyer or else they would have lost their shirts in the deal.

Technically, the Blues were sold to Saskatoon in 1983. However, the NHL vetoed the move, claiming that Saskatoon was too small, and the Blues organization did not have permission to move. As a punishment, the NHL nixed the deal, and did not let the Blues participate in the 1993 NHL draft.

It's too bad, however I doubt they would have lasted to long.

It's a very interesting story, and I have found a link that explains what exactly happened with the St Louis Blues sale. www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1983/83facts.html

I remember Don Cherry stating on HNiC during this that he would like go to Saskatoon and coach the Blues. He thought Saskatoon would be a great NHL city. This was 1980s but I still think he's right here in 2005. Certainly a "very-small market" but Regina-Saskatoon would eat it up. The NHL structured properly could make Halifax and St. John's NHL cities too. I am certainly just being emotional here but I get so sour when Tampa can win the Cup and No One in Tampa notices it happened. I'm from PEI so I was happy to see Brad Richards do good. But upon meeting tourists from Florida who didn't realise that Florida even had hockey teams.....well I get mad!! GO JETS GO!!! GO NORDS GO!!!!

i've said it before and i will say it again. ron maclean for comissioner. No thanks. It would become manditory that all jerseys would be Blue and White with a Maple Leaf logo. Much like the one he wears on HNIC under his blazer. I'll pass.

I'll pass. are you forgeting that he's from alberta not toronto. he just works for toronto biased hockey night in canada. i love his interviews with gary bettman. i think maclean would make a great commissioner. they need to have somebody in there that knows the game of hockey. someone that cares about the sport as well as the business.
