I wonder if Fergie was drunk, or just plain ignorant to trade arguably the Jets best defensemen for a journeyman that nobody heard of in the fall of 85.. I remember the Jets taking a nosedive immediately after the trade, and went on to finish Definitely the worst trade the Jets ever made...by far.

If I recall the Ellett trade didn't set the house on fire either....................

If I recall the Ellett trade didn't set the house on fire either.................... True, but at Least the Leafs didn't set the league on fire after acquiring Ellett. The Whalers won their only division title after that trade. That hurt!

By the Way it's NEUFELD.
The Jets started to nose dive before the trade, that's one of the reasons it was made, the trade just helped speed it up more. They were gonna go down in flames anyway.
The offence went away from the 85 season when they had a record 6- 30 goal players,The #1 goalie was the backup in 35 year old Dan Bouchard who was on his way out,Hayward fell asleep and noboby woke him up for the start of the season. The defence lost Babych and Picard to trades within weeks of each other,So they relied to much on offense from Ellett and Carlyle, with Marios (for Picard) Watters and Kyte to back them up.
I remember the night it happened,i heard they made a trade so I stayed up late to catch the late night sports, when I heard the sports guy say Neufeld I got excited (I knew who he was for personal reasons) then I heard him say Babych and I went HUH?
The only way he was gonna get goals in the Peg,was if he was on #10's line all the time, they didnt want to put him there, and they thought he could be more Of a Wendall Clark player witch he was not and never going to be.He was a 26-27 goal scorer in Hartford for 3 years, and I think Fergie thought he was going to get 35-40 here.

I have to respectfully disagree with you . The Jets got off to a poor start, considering they were coming off their greatest season, but they were by no means, going down in flames. definitely not one of Fergie's best moments.

I would concur that the Babych trade was the worst Fergie ever made. The Jets were sputtering some when the deal was made, but they tanked big time after that deal. I think they finished that season with 60-something points, and were swept 1,2,3 by the Flames. I remember and agree that Hayward had hit the skids that year too...and another Fergie fav...Marc Behrend...never panned out in net...
I think Fergie blew it when he drafted Babych and proclaimed that he was the next Denis Potvin. I think Jets fans naively believed that and booed Babych way too much...he was a defenceman who could move the puck, but I think people saw his size and thought he should be putting people thru the boards on every shift. It just wasn't his game.
I thought he was good in Slapshot 2 though...he had one realy good line...

babych was friggin GREAT!...he held that blueline for the most part on his own. and lets not forget, the guy could FIGHT!!!...i remember he fought a guy from boston ( pat price i think) and babych really didnt want to drop the gloves ( the game was on CKND) but he had no choice, and then proceeded to beat the living daylights out of the guy!...blood was spurting everywhere and you could tell how sorry dave felt from doing it. he was our best dman EVER. housley was good, long was a legend, but babych was, well he was the man!

O.K. I don't agree, but you called him our "best dman ever", I still see Housley as that. Just in assist's to Selanne ALONE should give Phil the title.

phil played on a better jets team. babych did not. babych carried the team in a way that housley would never be able to do. did u even see babych play?.....i did.

Every home game ever played. Section 10, row 6 seat 13. I just don't have the love you do. Sure I thought he was great, but the greatest?? I dunno.

. . . Hayward fell asleep and noboby woke him up for the start of the season. I wonder if anyone remembers how bad Hayward's confidence was that season. He had a bad problem with the 5-hole and opposing players knew it well. There was even a joke about Hayward beng so down about his season that he decided to jump in front of a bus but it went between his legs. Ah the good ol' days!

Babych played on Go Jets Go jets teams, phil didnt. and that was my point. sh i tt y teams, yes, dale played on the same sh i tt y teams too. and i was talking about the blueline, hawerchuck only played on the blueline for PP's . so, my argument that babych was the better of the two defencemen stands.
