Doug Weight and Barret Jackman Named Assistant Captains
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Head Coach Mike Kitchen announced today that forward Dallas Drake will serve as team captain for the 2005-06 season, while Doug Weight and Barret Jackman were named assistant captains.
"With the recent retirement of Al MacInnis we are pleased to name Dallas Drake as captain of the St. Louis Blues. Dallas’ leadership on and off the ice speaks for itself. And joining Dallas will be Doug Weight and Barret Jackman as his assistants," said Kitchen.
Drake, 36, was signed by St. Louis as a free agent on July 1, 2000. During each of his four years in St. Louis he has appeared in 79-plus games, playing in a career-high 82 games in 2000-01. Drake also netted a career-high 20 goals during the 2002-03 season. On Oct. 29, 2003 at Detroit, the 6-1, 190-pound forward tied a franchise record and set a career high with five assists, while recording his 400th career point. The Trail, B.C., native was originally Detroit’s sixth selection, 166th overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.
Weight, 34, was traded to St. Louis by the Edmonton Oilers on July 1, 2001. He will continue to serve as an assistant captain, as he has since the 2001-02 season. In his three seasons with the Blues, Weight has recorded 181 points (44 goals, 137 assists) in 206 games played. The 5-11, 200-pound forward finished first on the club and seventh in the NHL with 51 assists during the 2003-04 season. The Detroit, Mich., native was originally the New York Rangers’ second selection, 34th overall, in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.
Jackman, 24, played in his first full NHL season with the Blues in 2002-03 and became the first player in franchise history to capture the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year. That season, the 6-0, 197-pound defenseman led all rookies in average ice time (20:04), finished second among rookies with a plus-23 rating and was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team. The Trail, B.C., native was originally St. Louis’ first choice, 17th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
