I would have to give my vote to our Russian friend, Alexei Zhamnov. So much potential, so little effort.

He did have some decent seasons with the Jets though, 1994-95 and 1995-96. He was above a point per game in the 94-95 season and was just under in the 95-96 season. He had the important task of setting up Tkachuk and Selanne.

Boy that is a good question, but since the Jets received such little national media attention, it's hard to pinpoint anyone who could be labelled as "overrated".
I agree with the Zhamnov comment though, he had some good productive years but still could have done so much more.

Zhamnov, Tkachuck, Davydov, Beautin (whom Parkhurst made a "Calder Candidate" card for,) Dave Christian and Kent Nilsson were all supremely overrated. However, Zhamnov may have been the worst of all because he never gave any indication that he had any enjoyment at all for the game.

Dave Babych, good solid defensemen, but I think he was overrated, Especially by Ferguson Babych was arguably our best defenseman ever. It's a bloody shame we traded him for Neufeld. I still remember when they announced the trade in late 1985. The Jets went into a nosedive, and may have lost 20 of their next 25 games. They ended up finishing that season 26-47-7 (59 points), after their best year ever (96 points). A 37 point drop over one season is what effect the babych trade had on the Jets.

MY list of overrated Jets players:- Jimmy Mann (1979-84): First Jets player ever drafted in the NHL (19th overall). Was thought to be a Messier-type player, with toughness, and scoring ability. Nine goals in his career as a Jet. need I go on?
- Morris Lukowich (1978-85): After leading the Jets in their final WHA year, with an outstanding 65 goal season at only 22 years of age, he was mediocre throughout his NHL career.
- Brent Ashton (1988-92): Maybe it was because Paul MaclEan was traded for Ashton, but I just never thought this guy contributed much to the team, despite putting up some respectable numbers for a couple of seasons.
- Ed Olczyk (1990-92, 1995-96): Solid player, never lived up to the hype. Plus, we had to give up 1990 Playoff hero Dave Ellett to get him from the Leafs. Was traded to the NY Rangers for King & Domi in late 92 (one of the Jets better trades). Came back after the 1994-95 strike, but made little impact...
- Sergei Bautin (1992-94): Jets 92 1st round draft pick had one respectable season, then did nothing for the team, and getting traded once Mike Smith was ousted as GM.
- "Red Light" Rick Tababaracci (1990-93): Hailed as the future star goaltender of the Jets, Tabbi never lived up to expectations. In perhaps the worst decision the team ever made, he was given the nod to start all 7 games against the Canucks, over Essensa (who was a Vezina Trophy finalist) in the 1992 Playoff series.

In Lukowich's defence, he did come down with knee injuries that ultimately ruined his career and by his 3rd year in Winnipeg, he was all but done.
